(Reuters) - Doctors performed a tracheotomy on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday, inserting a breathing tube through a hole in her neck and removing her from a ventilator, hospital officials said.
It was the first time Giffords was removed from the ventilator since last Saturday, when she arrived at University Medical Center after a gunman shot her through the head.

Why is she on a ventilator?I thought she was breathing on her own? Something tells me she is in worse condition than reported.

The doctors had stated that it was not breathing for her, only keeping her throat open to ward off swelling - that she was breathing on her own.

What about the hundreds that have been murdered, raped, beaten, terrorized, robbed or killed by drunk drivers that are illegal immigrants? Where is the media and where is OUR outrage?
Yes, I am sorry that a crazy fool in Tucson killed 6 people and a Congresswoman was shot.
Where was the anger over the rancher/border patrolman/etc that were murdered by drug dealers and other trash crossing our borders?

A trach and PEG (her feeding tube) are SOP for head injury patients - she might be breathing on her own but not alert enough to protect her airway from choking on secretions.
The reports continue to sound encouraging, a seeming miracle considering the extent of her injuries. Prayers for her and her family in this uncertain time.
They also inserted a feeding tube.
Her brain may not be able to send the signal to breathe, to swallow, to manage nutrition.
She needs our prayers.
Yes, I fear she is going to be like James Brady, with a functioning body and a half-functioning brain.

Avoiding threads that raise your ire isn’t a bad thing to do.
This is strange. If she’s not on a vent, then the trach would be neededfor her to protect her airway, which leads me to think she’s either not conscious or she’s have difficyluty swallowing. Somebody in the media isn’t being honest. Listening to news reports they practically have her ready for discharge.

Yes, it’s the actual headline. The mods thump us on the head if we alter the actual title. When people alter the title, it affects the ability to search to see if the story has already been posted.
That would be up to the State of Arizona and what contingencies they have build into their statutes would be my guess.

The thing about it she could take a turn for the worse at anytime. A little caution in reporting is warranted.

tracheotomy likely done at the get-go to put her on the vent in the first place... they’re in the process of weaning her from the vent.
