Yes, I fear she is going to be like James Brady, with a functioning body and a half-functioning brain.
It is horrible to contemplate.
My prayers are with her and her family....it’s going to be a long and difficult road ahead.
I’ve heard/seen reports (mostly on an ABC report with Bob Woodruff who suffered a severe brain injury due to an IED in Iraq a few years ago) that said the kind of brain damage Jim Brady had was because the bullet had crossed both hemispheres of the brain (ear to ear direction). Giffords’ injury is from side/back to front, which apparently is a plus in her favor. She will probably have to relearn some things, BUT I don’t believe she will be damaged as badly as James Brady was.
As an aside, I want to thank the FReepers here for their kind and loving prayers for someone who’s beliefs are diametrically opposed to their own—even those who don’t wish to participate aren’t being ugly— for example, (GOD FORBID) if something like this had happened to Sarah Palin, there are many on the left who would not be praying, but would be actively partying and celebrating and hoping she wouldn’t survive and if she did, that she WOULD be *worse* than James Brady—I daresay there would even be some Terri Schiavo comparisons in an ugly way. :*( So thank you FReepers for rising above the pettiness (especially after conservatives have been blamed for Giffords’ shooting and the deaths of the 6 victims). You all ROCK. :*)
This is my fear as well. While I pray she comes through this whole, I also fear for the damage she will do to our country.
Unfortunately, there is no constitutional provision to force a member of congress who is no longer mentally capable of making a rational decision out of office.
I saw on the tv today she could possibly make a full recovery. >:) Keep praying for Gabby.
