Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus led after the first ballot in the race for chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Needing 85 votes among the 168 members to win, Priebus took 45 votes in the first round. Trailing Priebus after one round is Chairman Michael Steele with 44 votes, former RNC official Maria Cino with 32 votes, Michigan Committeeman Saul Anuzis with 24 votes, and former Missouri GOP Chairwoman Ann Wagner with 23 votes.
Several more ballots are expected before someone reaches the 85-vote threshold. Steele won the 2009 race after six rounds, defeating a five-candidate field that included Anuzis and then-Chairman Mike Duncan.
All eyes are now on Steele to see if his support begins to dwindle. In 2009, Duncan dropped out after three rounds after watching his vote total dwindle from 52 to 44. He had led after the first round and was tied with Steele after the second round.
The sense here is that if Steele did not finish in first place after the first ballot, he would have a difficult chance of winning. Still, much of the talk among members before this vote centered on whether Steele would leave the race when it became apparent he could not win...
The thinking is that Preibus can have one toe in the Tea Party side & the rest of his body in the Establishment side....so as to help Haley along the way, not officially but to steer things in Haley’s way all the while saying that he is a breath of fresh air to the Tea Parties
If this eases your mind any, as Wisconsin GOP chair Priebus worked in concert with Tea Party to flip 2 House seats (from 3-5 to 5-3 GOP), defeat a 25 year incumbent uber-liberal US Senator, and help take back control of the Governorship, the state assembly and senate. Priebus’ leadership created the largest party swing of any state in the country. He was among the few state chairmen to work in concert with, rather than in opposition to, the Tea Party.
Sounds like a load to me.
Which one was the MSM darling? I thought it was Cino?

Reince and Repeat?
The Barbours are competent, it’s just that Haley seems so set on a quixotic run for himself. He’s got the bug so bad that he’s trying to get his poor state to fund a civil rights museum to make up for his gaffes a few weeks ago.
I’m not jumping up and down happy with any of them, but I watched the debate and despised that Ann Wager straight away and also that Cino hag. Of the two remaining men, I liked the man from Wisconsin MUCH more than the other guy.
All Reince to the occasion.
Thanks Tom for these charts.
Looks like Priebus has it, but then at the last minute we may see a change. He needs 5 but Wagner and Cino could spoil his day by throwing to Anuzis.
This will be a bit close. I bet they go to 8 or nine , even 10 ballots, if Priebus doesn’t win the next one.
So exactly how long have you been waiting to use that line, CD?
If he bagged a Senatorial seat for Wisconsin and did the rest, then I retract. He can pronounce his name any way he wants. Good Job!
I see what you did there.
Nice chart. Thank you.

Wagner should drop out and endorse Priebus right now—Priebus will get those 5 votes anyway, and they’ll likely come from Wagner voters.
Wagner thinks she’s headed for the Beltway. Cino has the looks for radio.
The anti RINO sentiment is strong and under-reported.
Actually, Missouri lost a seat in the 2010 Census and Wisconsin didn’t.
