The 1980s song Money for Nothing by the British rock band Dire Straits has been deemed unacceptable for play on Canadian radio.
In a ruling released Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council says the song contravenes the human rights clauses of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code. A listener to radio station CHOZ-FM in St. John's complained last year that the song includes the word faggot in its lyrics and is discriminatory to gays.

I think the Brits call cigarettes ‘fags.’
So I guess they left Aerosmith’s song “Dude looks like a Lady” out of this ban.
“On The Night”...excellent as well.
So-called Western civilization is turning into a prolonged Monty Python sketch.
Well, the answer is that there are many, many words which only certain people are permitted to use. Blacks can say the N word, but anyone else is is big trouble. You can have a Department of Queer Studies at a university, provided that it takes a positive view of the subject and is run by gays. But straights are not permitted to use the word.
The same with faggot. Only faggots are allowed to say faggot.
Do they allow the play of ‘Texas Love Song’ by Elton John?
There is currently a YouTube Video of Dire Straits doing this song where Mark Knofler changes the wording to “ see the Queenie “ in leiu on the word faggot , found that curious when I went there recently to match the meter used in the song which is slightly faster in the live version than the original studio recording . This Song really got a lot of people watching MTV in the beginning before they went totaly hip hop . Hip Hop is the lack of music IMO .
“When did faggot become a slur? Gay people say it all the time.”
Maybe they were talking about bundles of firewood? Or cigarettes?
The radio stations in my town back then often ran an edited version of the song when it first came out. It would be “The little (dead space) got his own jet airplane” etc.
But I agree, it’s silly and more than a little disturbing when playing a particular song might get you in trouble with a human rights tribunal (which, I assume would be the consequence for playing a song in violation of Canada’s HR clauses).
I do wonder, though. Can Canadian radio stations still play The Door’s cover of “Backdoor Man”? /only semi-sarc.
I want my, I want my M.T.V.

Get your money for nothing, get your chicks for free (I want my, I want my, I want my M.T.V.)
Money for nothing and chicks for free
Easy, easy

I wonder if they are aware the man singing those lyrics is, in fact, gay.
A couple of years ago, my son and I were out for a walk and passed a yard where some teenagers were having a party with loud music. Hip-hop stuff. In the five minutes we were within earshot, I heard nearly every foul word and slur imaginable.
But we live in the Land of the Free, as opposed to the True North that used to be Strong and Free, and although I wished the teens had toned it down, and I don’t approve of what they were listening to, I wouldn’t dream of censoring it.
Is this really the Pandora’s box they want to open? There’s oh so much to be offended by. And they want to start with Mark Knopfler? Seriously?

Wow, it took someone almost 30 years to discover the word faggot in the lyrics????
Holly came from Miami, F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the USA
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side
Hey honey
Take a walk on the wild side
Candy came from out on the Island
In the backroom she was everybody's darlin'
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head
She says, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side
I Said, Hey baby
Take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls go
Doo do doo do doo do do doo..
Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New York City's the place where they say,
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said, Hey Joe
Take a walk on the wild side
Sugar Plum Fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin' for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the Apollo
You should've seen em go go go
They said, Hey shuga Take a walk on the wild side
I Said, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side
All right, huh
Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that bash
Said, Hey babe,
Take a walk on the wild side
I said, Hey honey,
Take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls say,
Doo do doo do doo do do doo
Wow, and they’re only 25 years too late.

The USA is right behind Canada. We have more dumbed down liberal cretins then Carter has pills. Or was that peanuts?
