As Sarah Palin has just learned, keeping up with the rules about using phrases that are associated with Jewish history is not as simple as it used to be. I was under the impression that the list of phrases that were considered off limits for general consumption was confined more or less to those associated with the Holocaust. Meaning, for instance, that the use of the word "holocaust" should be confined to discussion of events surrounding the genocide of Jews in Europe between 1933 and 1945. But even that stricture has been hard to enforce. Indeed, when an episode of the TV show The X-Files once referred to the mysterious death of amphibians in a lake as a "frog holocaust," you knew that the word had become more of a metaphor than a specific historical term.

They would be attacking anything she might have said. It’s what they do.
I’m sorry, but your judgment of her is based on a basic misunderstanding of the term “blood libel”, which is NOT specifically reserved to the Jews. Others who used the term suffered no backlash, but she does, and therefore it is her fault?
I’m not sure there is any way for her to win, under the rules as you portray them.
“Blood libel” refers to Jews killing, eating and sucking the blood of children in 12th century Spain. The charges were all lies, of course.
When you say Palin used the term in “EXACTLY the right context,” are you saying someone accused her of killing, eating, and sucking the blood of a child? Because that’s the only “correct context” for the term. Those who’ve used it differently over the past few weeks are simply ignorant of its history. Ignorance is commonplace in many quarters of society, but a dangerous failing in a leader, which is why Palin’s willingness to speak a term of which she is ignorant is so troubling.
To the contrary: the usage was inspired! It perfectly captures the character of her critics!
It's hard to believe how she can hit it out of the park so consistently
Physician heal thyself of ignorance.
When you say “refers to” you are only correct insofar as “blood libel” is the name of the dishonest tactic....NOT the accusation the tactic employed.
Don't you mean "disingenuous?" ;o)
She was accused of having innocent blood on her hands, that she was the one who was at fault for the killings. The charges are all lies, of course. No one has a patent on words. Is the word vendetta exclusive to Italians? History also changes the context of the words. If you are going to get upset by one offense, get upset by all. Why is the first public outcry I can remember relating the possible misuse of the term?
I do not believe that Sarah Palin intended to offend Jews by the combination of those two words. I’ll bet she is a stronger supporter of Israel then a lot of Jews in this country are. She wanted to convey a message, which she did, in my opinion, accurately. It doesn’t matter what she would have said or didn’t say. People who are offended by what she said were going to be offended no matter what two words she put together.
Wouldn’t dream of it.
Bottom line—Sarah’s not backing down and it’s driving the Left nuts.
The previous post is said with all due respect. My intention is not to offend, although I tend to do it quite often and with very little effort. I realize it might not be me, might be the sign of the times.
Several times in my life Jewish people I know, family included, have used their Jewishness against me. They’ve used it as an excuse to be offended. I’ve heard “you hate me because I’m Jewish” when trying to clear up a problem so many times in dealing with certain people. Sometimes, I didn’t know the individuals ethnic background until they said I hated them. Surprised the heck out of me.
I’ll probably get flamed for what I just said. It is my personal experience and, again, no offense is intended.
I’ve lost sympathy for those who cry “offense” that when a real offense does occur, it doesn’t mean anything any more.
1) Negative Event Occurs.
2) Immediately blame Sarah Palin.
3) Events unfold showing Sarah Palin not at fault, or even involved.
4) Blame Sarah Palin harder.
5) IF SARAH PALIN DOES NOT RESPOND: Declare her out-of-touch and non-Presidential.
6) IF SARAH PALIN RESPONDS MILDLY: Declare her wishy-washy and incapable of leadership.
7) IF SARAH PALIN RESPONDS FORCEFULLY: Declare her too provocative and incendiary.
In college they are getting bull%$#t in the name of a supposed education by people who are supposed to be trusted and revered for their so called wisdom.
I figure it takes kids years to get over college at times. maybe even a decade.
You can learn anything you want to just by reading and doing. I've learned that over and over again in my life. I received advanced personal trainer certification back in the 90's. You were suppose to have a 2-4 year college degree in some medical field. I've never been to college. For about 15 some years I'd been bodybuilding and reading everything I could on nutrition, and the body how it works, like the krebs cycle how the muscle connect and work ect. I passed the test.
Problems with college these days are that you degrees could be worth nothing.
Lets say you want to be in computer sciences or an engineer. Ends up they go out of the country and hire India's people at 30 cents on the dollar.
We are competing with the slave labor of China and other third world nations from around the world.
Our unions took it too far the other way and ended up closing our manufacturing base for the most part.
My wife is in college right now, we are both lucky to be working as well and I can't say it is easy to suggest a path for her to follow where she could be guaranteed employment.
I have all kinds of friends, one of them is a professor who is also a world class lawyer in the taxation field.
He teaches at a major University here in CA and has seen the class sizes of his tripled because of Democrats coming into power.
Interesting times, sometimes a degree and other times not. Tough to know for sure anything in these tough times IMO.
Your right about the degree, sometimes not and sometimes you have to. It’s so darned expensive and so much garbage is taught. You really want to make sure your kids are well grounded before they go. My niece is a mess and it started in college. She still believes the drivel taught to her and it’s been 12 years since she left college.
I agree, the problem is no conservatives really went into teaching and media compared to all the liberals.
My sister in law worked for our local school system. She was a teachers aid. Most of the teachers were democrats, union and liberal in varying degrees. She was always uncomfortable. I told her once that maybe she was the only light in a dark place. It's true and I think it helped her cope.
The guy was a Marxist, but he was honest and well-meaning. I changed my career aspirations on the spot.
