FYI -
Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.
===
"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Dont have the financial wherewithal."
"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."
"If FR dies, thats that."

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.
Its going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, theres no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and theres no guarantees we can cover this quarters expenses much less next quarter. Were on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.
Throwing more money at the problem wont solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, were not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and hes pushing 40 now. He built these systems and hes an expert in them.
And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no were not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and thats for sure. And we dont have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.
All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get er done!! Ill bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.
Hit it boys:

And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

ditto here Marty62
but here’s another thing that Jim did not directly address in his note to everyone here @FR in clear english:
The bottom line cost of the server(s) and the new and forthcoming government clampdowns on information flow to websites such as this where opinion is expressed.
This is where the bottleneck resides.

Are we going to have a Moderator Fest now?

read and give
DJ, FR isn't a business model, it's a conservative activism site. It's also Jim's baby. He brought it into the world and nurtured it to its present influential state. Jim knows what's best for FR.
As far as I have seen, that is an absolute fact. I have not seen any site that makes it clear who you are responding to AND links to that post AND allows you to edit/add addressees for your post AND is populated largely by sane people AND has Admin Moderators who exercise reasonable judgment and have a sense of humor AND who have gurus like Jim and John who actually respond like human beings to the posters AND allow wonderful social threads AND allow crazy humor threads AND allow funny pre-zot banter before the actual Zot AND I could go on and on ...
It sounds like Jim is perfectly happy to keep operating this way and I understand and hope to see that go on as long as possible. But there may be a time when this homegrown operation becomes unsustainable without some modernization and some routine, mindless IT staffing, I hope overseen by someone committed to keeping Jim's and John's vision, principles and FR architecture alive, and I hope the "someone" will be Jim and John for as long as possible.
Can any of you envision things without FR? Not a pretty picture. I think those of us fortunate enough to have a shot at having a few bucks left when 0bama's death panels take us out, should think about leaving some bucks to FR. We can't risk letting this forum disappear ...
It sure has!
God bless the FreeRepublic!
May you all find it in your heart...and pocketbook/wallet...to donate at least ONE DOLLAR.
Just ONE DOLLAR...from each and every one of you...
Thank you for the ping, potlatch!
LOL very good...
I concur. I’ve occasionally gone over to KOS to see what the opposition are doing and its just unreadable.
According to this site, FR is worth almost a million dollars:

As has been amply demonstrated any attempt at presenting Mormon information in anything other than an LDS controlled way is bigotry and is a hateful attack.
Interesting.
If ones doctrine was sound I think one would like someone spreading the inforamtion around...
One can have discussions over doctrinal differences, but both sides must have the courage of their convictions and at least a goodly amount of substantial support for their POV.
In a doctrinal battle between fact and fiction, fiction loses every time.
Those invested in the fiction only have emotions to react with.
You realize that you can Gzip static files and they don’t need to be gzipped every time they are served, right?
We would all sound like the GPS voice without it.
I’m not the one that said it was a business model. My statement was in italics.
You had nothing to say to begin with.
Hate: anything that is not positive and glowing about MORMONism.
INDEED.
Thx for your kind reply.
