Coldest January Since 1985 Could be Taking Shape
AccuWeather.com ^ | Jan 7, 2011

For people who hate cold weather, the forecast for the next couple of weeks is bad news. Waves of frigid air invading the U.S. will become progressively colder and more widespread, with the worst coming in the third week of January.

Many people in the East will get a slight taste of the colder air this weekend before more substantial cold takes hold from coast to coast next week.

This upcoming cold weather pattern could yield snow or ice in places that don't often get it. Seattle, Wash., Portland, Ore., Dallas, Texas, Memphis, Tenn., and Charlotte, N.C., are all in the running for possible snow or ice next week.

How widespread the cold air is across the U.S. through mid- to late month could make this the coldest January for the nation as a whole since 1985, according to AccuWeather.com Chief Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi.

I remember that Winter of ‘85.

I think I was in 5th grade at the time, and we didn’t have school for nearly the entire month of January because of the weather. Just for fun, I took a piss on the back patio, and around 20min later it was frozen. lol (I believe that yellow patch of ice stayed there for two weeks)

You just persuaded me to stay in Rancho Mirage for at least another 3 weeks.

72oF out by the pool yesterday. Almost no golfers out on the course today. Perhaps they all drowned or froze to death before they could get down to the desert.

LOL!

It's twelve below zero outside my door right now...

Since I established the "gulch" out here in the North Central I've learned the locals don't consider it truly cold till it hits forty below. Then, it just doesn't matter any more!

Thank God for Global Warming!  Can you imagine how cold it would be now without it?

It was -24 in Maryville, TN and our oil pipes burst. I spent 20 minutes at a time keeping 2 fireplaces going. Thank God I was in shape and could handle it. (btw, I gave up my bed and slept near place #1) :^)

I recall a corner sidewalk in downtown Detroit where a pool of vomit was frozen in situ and visible thru the ice for two weeks.

That image has stayed with me for almost thirty years -- and I couldn't wait to get out of town and back to Texas.

I remember reading about a construction worker in Chicago working on a high-rise construction site. It was a bitter cold winter day. The worker picked up his gear and hollered to the foreman that he was going home to get his heavier coat. The supervisor yelled back "OK. Where's home?"

The worker yelled back "Houston".

I’m in middle TN and the snow has just started. It will be a messed up commute in the morning.

Well isn’t that just great. I remember those days back in ‘85. It was -25*F in Indianapolis.

My memory of January ‘85 was the cancellation of Reagan’s 2nd Inaugural at the Capitol. It was so very bitter cold, the swearing in had to be moved to the White House. I felt so badly for all those high school bands that had been raising $$ for four years so they could come to Washington for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to march in an Inaugural parade. And I felt awful for a friend who’d come in from Chicago, having spent a small fortune on a gown to wear to an Inaugural Ball that was also canceled. Ultimately, I felt worse for the kids.

I think we made it to 20 today. I really don’t mind the cold as long as a bunch of snow does not come with it.

That was when Reagan’s second inaugural was moved indoors due to the brutal cold.

Oops, I meant to also say if this does pan out it should revive the coming ice age story from the early 80’s,
