Coldest January Since 1985 Could be Taking Shape
AccuWeather.com ^ | Jan 7, 2011

Posted on 01/09/2011 9:57:53 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

For people who hate cold weather, the forecast for the next couple of weeks is bad news. Waves of frigid air invading the U.S. will become progressively colder and more widespread, with the worst coming in the third week of January.

Many people in the East will get a slight taste of the colder air this weekend before more substantial cold takes hold from coast to coast next week.

This upcoming cold weather pattern could yield snow or ice in places that don't often get it. Seattle, Wash., Portland, Ore., Dallas, Texas, Memphis, Tenn., and Charlotte, N.C., are all in the running for possible snow or ice next week.

How widespread the cold air is across the U.S. through mid- to late month could make this the coldest January for the nation as a whole since 1985, according to AccuWeather.com Chief Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi.

Oh yeah, Joe has been right on the money this year. This was his winter forecast back in October. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Not far from the coldest place in the lower 48... International Falls is an hour or so away... Nothing like Alaska colds... but close enough!

Well Pa. has more than enough snow and cold for me. I can hardly imagine waking up to 40 below. “Brittle” stuff! I’d be homebound for the duration!

Hey there snippy! Snow in your neck o’ the woods isn’t common so you’d better enjoy it while you can. LOL!

Everything’s pretty much shut down in Middle TN. It’s eerily quiet outside - - - no traffic noise at all. We’re just a quarter mile from a highway and it always noisy, day and night.

I’m with you. Further south is sounding mighty good right now. LOL!

Ol’ Joe’s Oct. winter forecast map is way off for TN. We’ve had below normal temps and above normal snow and ice so far. Guess the trick is to take what he comes up with and expect the opposite.

I remember the winter of 1993-94 being substantially colder here. That was the last time I can remember it being -5 F to -10F here in southeastern PA.

I’m enjoying the fact that a few inches of snow causes a day off work. LOL. It is rare but I really don’t enjoy days passing with continual snow on the ground, not to mention temperatures in the 20s and 30s. I’m in SC for heaven’s sake. Of course when summer comes I’ll complain about it being over 90 for weeks on end. Good to see you, keep those cats warm!

I had a woodshed (10’ x 20’) two thirds full before this winter started. This year I will run out of wood for the wood heater, this month. In the past, I had always had enough. Dang, and I hate working wood with a chainsaw, maul, and a wheelbarrow. I’m freezing out here. God sent me some warmer air, please.

Not to make you all feel old, but I was born in February of 85 and was told it was very cold that winter.

I remember it snowing in Los Angeles around 1949 ... I was driving through Sepulveda pass in a blizzard.

How cold is it?

FRiends, my hamster running my computer, is going on strike if I do not raise the temperature in the house above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. That hamster is threatening to join a union. Looks like I am going to have to go hamster trappin' as well, and throw the one I have out in the snow.

Haha I was born in November of 1983 so I’m not that much older than you. I remember the rare snowstorm on Thanksgiving Day during late ‘80 in Maryland. Then in ‘90s, we hardly had any snow.

I hate global warming. Hate it!

In case you haven’t been monitoring our weather outlook, we’re under a winter storm warning from 10 PM Tuesday to 4 PM Wednesday...snow accumulations from 6-10 inches.

This will be followed on Thursday by warm temperatures and a hydrologic warning. All the snowpack below 4000’ is expected to melt by Friday, leading to runoff from melting snow and rainfall causing significant rises in rivers and streams.

This warmup may also result in the breakup of ice cover on streams and tributaries, raising the potential for ice jams and localized flooding. Those with interests near area rivers and streams are warned to “remain vigilant for rising water and be aware of futue outlooks or warnings from the National Weather Service.”

Cool, huh? Not.

West Central bred and born here, Alexandria.. I used to listen for the coldest temp of the day,, Int’l Falls usually racked honors,, the Iron range got pretty cool too..

We hit -40 and colder more a few times as I recall, nothing like walking on snowdrifts that crunch on your every step.. your eyelids freeze to your brows, icicles form off your nose and beard, this is more late 50s and 60s .. so cold the fish aren’t hungry
