Coldest January Since 1985 Could be Taking Shape
AccuWeather.com ^ | Jan 7, 2011

Posted on 01/09/2011 9:57:53 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

For people who hate cold weather, the forecast for the next couple of weeks is bad news. Waves of frigid air invading the U.S. will become progressively colder and more widespread, with the worst coming in the third week of January.

Many people in the East will get a slight taste of the colder air this weekend before more substantial cold takes hold from coast to coast next week.

This upcoming cold weather pattern could yield snow or ice in places that don't often get it. Seattle, Wash., Portland, Ore., Dallas, Texas, Memphis, Tenn., and Charlotte, N.C., are all in the running for possible snow or ice next week.

How widespread the cold air is across the U.S. through mid- to late month could make this the coldest January for the nation as a whole since 1985, according to AccuWeather.com Chief Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi.

Global warming is a hoax, not science you liberal puppet of the media.Global warming is a hoax: That is why the mainstream media and government funded “scientists” changed the name of global warming to climate change. Adjust your tin foil hat , you liberal.

Government/socialism doesn’t work. Thus Government funded science doesn’t work.

Where is the oil from the BP oil “disaster”? NOWHERE.

Face it,even on this site all are puppets of the mainstream liberal media as you all fell for the media’s BP oil disaster, although most of you on this site have seen the global warming hoax for what it is a hoax.. I live here in the Gulf. Global warming, BP oil disaster both hoaxes. BP oil spill was no disaster.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation for absorbing the cold and snow which might otherwise reach Florida. Your dedication and sacrifice for the well being and comfort of the Sunshine state’s residents should serve to warm your heart if the weather will not.

I live on the Gulf of Mexico too and will back you up on the BP hoax. No oil, just a yellow-green algae 30 miles offshore and that was gone by October.

We knew from last winter's cold that we'd have good inshore bottom fishing this summer as the bottom temps remained cold from last winter. Sure enough summer grouper which would normally be in 100’ depths were being caught in 40’ or less. And now the surface has cooled off from the summer and we're in the 50s, same as the gulf surface temps. But yet we're supposed to believe it's somehow from an oil spill? Ridiculous!

It’s good that someone else that knows the media’s BP oil disaster was no disaster. That 99% of people even on this site believed the democrat mainstream media on this BP “disaster” hoax, swine flu etc. shows that the liberal mainstream media is still firmly in control of the U.S. which is the problem.

Thanks.  Glad you enjoyed it.

Probably should add a "But don't try that at home, kids" warning.  Conditions like that can easily kill the unprepared.

I've been camping in the cold my whole life with family and the Boy Scouts.    Our troop was fortunate enough to be lead by veterans of WWII and Korea -- who knew that cold survival was a critical life-or-death skill.

I believe that was the year that on January 21 (I could be a day off on either side) EVERY STATE EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI EXCEPT FLORIDA was below zero in some towns that morning.

I think it was 7 degrees at inauguration time and that was the warmer part of that day.

‘94 had colder minimums (by a few degrees) than ‘85, but in ‘85 it was more widespread over a larger area.

In ‘94 Akron, OH (my hometown) hit -25F on January 19. In ‘85 it hit -24F so was a degree less cold, but places like Atlanta (which dipped to -8F in the ‘85 cold wave) didn’t get nearly as cold (maybe single digits above zero) in the ‘94 cold snap.

I was a junior in high school. I remember school being off because we dipped to 25 below. Even in the bright sunshine that day, it was still -20 around noon. I went outside, and it was colder than anything I could imagine...

On a side note, one of the local orchards lost 80% of their peach trees that year - not just the crop, but the entire trees died.

1985 Oh I remember that... but probably not as much as the local police who were sent out looking for myself and a football team-mate, when we thought it would be fun to go snow camping along the abandoned railroad tracks near the college.

Hah, that winter, my brother, a total nut, took a job as a lone watchman/caretaker at a construction site in the mountains of northern New Mexico...no accommodations were provided, and the phone froze from the moisture in his breath and he had to dry it out over a fire. He built a snow hollow, around the edge to keep the 60mph breeze out, and kept the fire going (thankfully wood and food were plentiful) all winter long. Just him and 3 dogs.

After that, he preferred to sleep outdoors whenever possible...

Interesting theory. Completely false. Here is the truth, published in May, 2010, when the consensus of alarmists was that the Loop Current would carry oil all around Florida and up the Atlantic Coast.

From the NYTimes: A large rotating cyclone of cold water is pushing into the southern body of the Gulf of Mexico's Loop Current and now appears likely to destabilize or even sever the current and the oil it contains from its connection to Florida, scientists said today.

The Gulf isn't cooler because of the Loop being severed, the Loop is severed because the Gulf is cooler...if in fact it even still is cooler than normal for January.

The fatal flaw in your theory, aside from the facts, is the lack of any reason to think some oil would disrupt a major ocean current in the first place. None of the "experts" ever suggested this would happen until they saw the disruption caused by the intrusion of cold water from the south. Then after the fact they jumped on the oil as an explanation with no evidence whatsover.

I remember it snowing in Los Angeles around 1949 ... I was driving through Sepulveda pass in a blizzard.

In an automobile or driving a team of horses hitched to a wagon?
