A longtime friend of Jared Lee Loughner, the suspect in custody following the murder of six people in an apparent assassination attempt on Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, said there was a mysterious, significant change in him a year before the shooting. "He was a good person that just somehow changed so much," former classmate and friend Tong Shan told ABC News in an exclusive interview. "I don't know what the hell happened to him."

When she heard news reports of Loughner's arrest in connection with the deadly attack, she said, "I was shocked, but I believed it was him."

According to court documents released today, authorities discovered a safe in Loughner's home with a thank you letter from Giffords for attending a Congress on Your Corner event in 2007 -- the same kind of event Loughner allegedly assaulted Saturday. Another envelope said "I planned ahead," "My assassination" and "Giffords" and bore what appears to be Loughner's signature, the documents said.

Gun control would not have helped for this event.

With hundreds of people in a parking lot he cold have killed and injured a lot more people by running over them with a Chevy Suburban than he did with a Glock

Good thing he took a taxi

Thanks worst-case scenario. He's obviously a deranged individual (all four of the Fox kids used "deranged" to describe the shooter). But, this looks like more meme-building by the partisan shill machine, just as all the libels against Tea Partiers, conservatives, Republicans, and Sarah Palin, have been part of meme-building. Burned flags? No problem (no coverage). Loved "The Communist Manifesto"? No problem (no coverage). Christian-hating atheist? No problem (no coverage). Wasn't really targeting Giffords? No problem (no coverage).

Thanks very much for this information. I am going to post it on my blog which leads people to healthy answers to depression and angst, instead of drug usage. I’ve read that a large percentage of schizophrenics smoke pot, and it’s very difficult to get them off of it. Dangerous drug indeed! Thanks again for the info.

Lots of people are heavy users of pot, but they don’t go on shooting rampages. If heavy pot use caused such rampages, we’d be on our thousandth reseating of Congress just counting the past decade.

You can be assured he’ll get off on some “insanity” defense.

They tell him that he either goes to the ER willingly or they call the police. When he breaks for the door, they tackle him and repeat. He will either go willingly or the police will take him.

I highly doubt it was pot. I know a lot of former and a few current potheads, about the only thing they were interested in assassinating was a Domino’s pizza...

His parents must be in agony. Their child had been living in their house; he took a cab to the event. How many “what if”s must be running through their minds...not to mention an overwhelming sense of shame and guilt (if they have any heart).

I tend to the belief that drug use among schizophrenics is a form of self-medication. When he actually does get onto a medication, and comes “back to reality” as so many do, he’ll also be so appalled that he may attempt suicide.

The paramount question for me is why an obviously deranged individual cannot be prevented from walking into a gun store and buying a Glock semi-automatic. There’s no registry of the mentally ill to check against gun purchases. Would the NRA even agree to such a development? He’s above the age of majority, so his parents cannot control him any longer - at least not in our present legal climate.

In the New York Metro area, this type of killing (on a smaller, less notable scale) occurs at least once a year. It’s an issue with a great deal of concern and cries for limiting the rights of the mentally ill to purchase weapons. We just had an incident in October where a 30 year old schizophrenic killed both his parents.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2010/10/17/2010-10-17_eric_bellucci_schizophrenic_accused_of_killing_his_parents_extradited_from_israe.html

I foresee that this horror will result in a demand for a restriction of the civil rights of the mentally ill. Forceable medication will become a civil rights debate.

You do not think he is insane?

Do you believe we should execute the mentally ill? Is the legal standard of “non compos mentis” not valid, in your opinion?

How do we know that no one - aside from the shooter - had a concealed weapon? The event seems to have happened too rapidly for a response.

Time has a very good article on the correlation between smoking Pot and schizophrenia. Depending on who you are studying, and accounting for different variables, it appears that smoking can induce the onset of schiz. a few years earlier than it would normally manifest, and it can increase intensity of psychotic episodes.

There have been many studies world-wide on this subject. The New Zealand study is not quoted in the article, but others are.
