STANFORD, Calif. - President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.
It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.
That news, first reported by CNET, effectively pushes the department to the forefront of the issue, beating out other potential candidates including the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

I was hoping when I clicked on this thread that the source article would be some conspiracy website like prisonplanet or such. That it's from CNet and reported by Declan McCullagh is disturbing to say the least.
The Obama administration is going to protect us from trying to memorize passwords? Um, no thanks. Sadly, I could see lawmakers from both parties rallying behind such an endeavor.

Personally, for me, this is the last straw. It is facism in its truest form. One of the main tenants of totalitarianism is control of free speech. THE one last outlet for 1st Amendment rights (free speech on the Internet), is now being abridged to the max. If they push this through - it is now war!

This whole scam is simply designed to control our behavior, as well as identify political association and eventually they will use it to track down people who do not comply with the State mandated ruling party agenda.
Tea Party members are already labeled as “racist”, radical and dangerous. The MSM campaign to tag them with what ever other “crimes against the State” is a guarantee eventually. Then they will be easily rounded up and charged with vast amounts of “evidence” gathered under this system.
It's like having the IRS handle collecting the Medical Insurance and penalty payments from the citizen population, under MaObamacare. They passed this in the dead of night, behind closed doors, completely against the Constitution, and they did under the Commerce Clause which has nothing to do with either illegal mandate. They will use the same tactic in this case. And they will make it happen.
Unless that is, the Republican’ts finally stand up and put an end to this evil. And I am not holding my breath. Republican'ts always whine and complain and talk a great fight around election time, but later lay down like sick dogs or hang out with the flea ridden Left in the Congressional Chambers.
I really don't expect much else to get done towards stopping this.
