Hey at least they are making a change. Here in Jacksonville the coach has been there for 8 years and has a 66-65 average and the owner of the Jags decided to fire the manager would not be good...and I am thinking...another losing season would be worse...oh well, you know those rich guys...lol

He had to, the money was too big to turn down.
Reportedly Harbaugh will get $5M/yr, and Stanford made him a similar offer. He wants to go to the NFL. The 49ers could be the ideal place - he gets a very weak division to play in, the 49ers do have some talent (though not nearly as much as their owner seems to believe), and 49ers fans have gotten used to lowered expectations since the Yorks took over.
He also gets to follow in Bill Walsh's footsteps, and Harbaugh seems to cherish his association with Walsh at Stanford.
The negatives are the clueless ownership and front-office. There's also the fact that college coaches haven't been setting the NFL on fire in recent years. Harbaugh is another Chicago tough guy from the '80s Bears, just like the 49ers' last coach Mike Singletary. But the tough guy rah-rah stuff goes over like a lead balloon in today's NFL. By the end of Singletary's run, players were no longer paying attention to him unless they were arguing loudly with him on the sideline.

I agree, I thought Miami would be tough, some pretty good teams and coaches in that div. Here he has an underachieving team ready to go (and you are right Alex Smith will never do) and not too much competition in the division.

Don’t worry. Michigan will sign Les Miles right after the conclusion of the Cotton Bowl.

Wouldn’t surprise with the era the NFL is in that he’ll regret leaving Stanford, but then again I’ve been wrong before.

Could be worse. He could be a Wolverine.

I’m starting the rumor right here and now: After tonight’s sweeping LSU victory, Wolverine eyes will turn to Baton Rouge and to Les Miles. The big announcement will be forthcoming on Monday. Geaux Tigers! Go Blue!

As a long time Niner fan, I must say:
No surprise
He probably will do very well
Which will help me to over come a very strong dislike for the guy because:
He is petty.
He is jealous of others (specifically Pete Carrol)
He is a hypocrite (called carrol a sell out for taking the Seattle job "for the money"
He has no class (yelling at opposing players, his post game performance after the bowl game Monday)

Bammer fans last seen putting Saban’s truck on blocks, in the off chance that Michigan comes calling. Backhoes in route to Bear's grave just in case first item materializes.

49ers were a team of underachievers. Big time. I liked Singletary, but this year was the year that they should have made the playoffs. No one to blame but the coach.

San Francisco and Baltimore are scheduled to play each other next year, so we will have one of those rare times when coaches who are brothers face off against each other.
Offhand, I can’t think of any times that has happened before, but I’d be surprised if this was a first.

unless they were arguing loudly with him on the sideline. When I saw that I knew he was gone, just thought the York's would have the decency to let him finish the year.

Also with the new bride, probably looking at the financial angle as well since Stanford wouldn't be able to match what an NFL team can pay. I've heard she is very happy in Palo Alto, with some of the best schools anywhere available for the kids. The Stanford faculty in the area wouldn't put up with anything less.
Supposedly, Harbaugh met with Stanford last night and they were going to sweeten the pot to be competitive, but that didn't work out. I think he just wants to coach an NFL team where he is in a position to succeed. He can do that in the NFC West, as opposed to the AFC East where he'd get pounded twice a year by the Pats as long as Brady is good, then twice a year by the Jets, then by his brother who coaches at Baltimore.
