The GOP House's Opening Act: Making a Statement -- Or Making a Mockery?
Time Magazine ^ | January 5, 2011 | Alex Altman

Posted on 01/05/2011 6:19:33 AM PST by Zakeet

Two months after a sweeping victory in the midterm elections, Republicans officially reclaim the House of Representatives on Wednesday. But before the new majority party begins the business of governing - which they don't even really get down to until the end of the month - they will take the opportunity to savor their triumph and make a statement with a good dose of Washington political theater.

At about noon, the House clerk will call the chamber to order. After reciting a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, the members will elect Rep. John Boehner as Speaker. The Ohioan will be presented by his predecessor, outgoing Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi, before swearing in the largest GOP freshman class in more than a half-century.

Then the festivities begin in earnest. Later in the afternoon, the GOP will introduce the Rules of the 112th Congress, a package of relatively radical provisions the party says will help reform the House budget process, ferret out waste and heighten transparency. (To the latter end, Republicans plan to live-stream the opening day's events over Facebook.) On Thursday morning, in a ceremony led by Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, House Republicans - and Democrats who accept an invitation to participate - will read aloud all 4,543 words of the Constitution, the text many of its members made the centerpiece of their fall campaigns. Then, on Friday, the GOP will punctuate a momentous week by opening floor debate on the repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Barring delay, House Republicans will repeal the outgoing Democratic Congress's signature legislative accomplishment on Jan. 12, just a week after regaining control of the lower chamber.

From the Mag Rag: Moving swiftly to eviscerate the health care law isn't merely a not-so-subtle overture to their conservative base. It also sets the tone for what could be a bitter two years of gamesmanship and gridlock on Capitol Hill, particularly since most legislation House Republicans shepherd through will likely perish in the still Democratic-controlled Senate. That will almost certainly be the fate of the health care repeal effort, which is officially titled the "Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act." Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a Connecticut Democrat, dubbed it a "disingenuous" piece of political theater. "It's a kabuki dance. The fact of the matter is we're not going to repeal it," she told reporters on Tuesday. "If it weren't so sad, it would be laughable."

From the Wag Hag: Reciting a prayer, saying the Pledge of Allegiance, reforming the House budget process, ferreting out waste heightening transparency, reading the Constitution, introducing a bill to kill Wee Wee Care, swearing in the largest GOP class in more than half a century, and voting me out as speaker is definitely making a mockery.

*will read aloud all 4,543 words of the Constitution*

Finally, now the Dems will know what's in it!

The tiny minority that do know what's in it should hang their heads in shame

Making a Statement or Making a Mockery?
After reading the first paragraphs I say that they are doing what the people that elected them instructed them to do. Their Job. Understand and defend the Constituion and roll back the attacks on America and it people that Obama instituted.

I was shocked when my wife's grandfather moved in with us and I read one of his Time magazines.

I hadn't read it in many years. I thought I was reading the magazine edition of Pravda from the 1970’s!
It seemed to me that Time used to be a mainstream publication. Now it seems like it’s the house organ for the Saul Alinsky UnAmerican Activities Clan.

Are the “radical provisions” the fact that the new Republicans mean to honor the Constitution*?

*I mean the American Constitution, Not Venezuela's or Cuba's

Adding to Michell Malkin's "Ten Simple Rules For The GOP", with the link posted on FR, I would say that number eleven should be:

11. Stop running away from mindless accusations of the media and the left.

Step up and say, "Yes, we ARE making a statement, at the same time we are MOCKING those in Congress - both Democrat and Republican - who have shown that they are willing to mock the Constitution by supporting and voting for bills and laws that are contrary to the spirit of, if not the stated intent of the Constitution, in rejection of the oath they took for office."

Spin it back at the media; they push the right pretty hard, but sometimes if you just step out of the way, they will just fall on their collective asses.

The 110th Congress DID by and large make a total mockery of the Constitution, led by a pres_dent who has openly stated his disdain and ire toward our Consitition.

It is mockery they deserve, and nothing less.

Terrorism is based on threats and the democrats are masters at the craft of threats and implied threats, they want us and the new Congress to be afraid of them. Fear is the tool they choose to govern, not the "rights" they so freely toss around when the press is listening.

The unafraid will win the day, but we cannot blink. We need to stop trying to get along with these leftist people, if you reach out to them, they will cut off your hand. It's what they do...it's on record...and it will not change.

Repeal bills may be “political theater”,

but leftists simply don’t want such bills to come up for a vote, because then they’ll be on record as opposing the will of the people.

‘rats and leftists operate best with the lights out.

They know what’s in it,
but like with the Bible,
they put their own authority over that which was written in the past.
It’s inherent in their ideology to discount wisdom of the past.

They are making a statement, and more importantly,

DRAWING A LINE IN THE SAND.

Dems and Rinos don’t want to go on record as being on the other side of that line.

“11. Stop running away from mindless accusations of the media and the left.”

Speaking of mindless accusations - the Democrats keep chanting: “Obama created a million jobs in his first year. That’s more than Bush created in his entire 8-year administration.”

My question is: What are they talking about? Unemployment during most of the Bush Admin was 5% or under. How can they say that there were no jobs when unemployment was that low?

I know that Democrats are liars, but surely there must be some statistic they are referencing here. Does anybody know what it is?

We need to know what Congresscritters are doing while the Constitution is read (the smart ones will be applauding) and especially WHICH of the bandits choose not to sit through it.

It’s truly sad that we even need to read the Constitution aloud to these dimwits, but it makes a strong statement. They took an oath and now they have no excuse for not living up to it. We The People need to hold their feet to the fire.

Yeah, this should be an interesting Congress. More so if the new Republicans avoid being perverted to the dark side, and if the older ones can grow a set and remember that we’re behind them.
