New Speaker Vows to Share Power—a Tricky Proposition
JANUARY 4, 2011
By NAFTALI BENDAVID And PATRICK O'CONNOR

When John Boehner takes over one of the most powerful jobs in Washington this week, he says his first order of business is to make himself less powerful.

On Wednesday the new speaker of the House of Representatives plans to offer a package of rule changes that, he says, will give minority-party members more of a say and decentralize power. In short, Ohio Republican Mr. Boehner is promising he'll be a different figure from many speakers throughout history—from Republican Joseph Cannon a century ago to his immediate predecessor, Democrat Nancy Pelosi—who kept a tighter leash.

But there's a reason so many speakers try to keep close control: It works.

To be fair, Boehner is not Newt Gingrich... he’s not the kind of guy who allows the power rush to get to his head and he well aware with the Democrats running the White House and Senate, there are limits to what he can do. You won’t find him making controversial statements that make him an easy punching bag for the Democrats.

He won’t be prime minister but more of a collegial coach which fits his leadership style. He’ll delegate much of that to Cantor and the House committee cardinals.

When will these Republican pricks learn that you cannot expect liberals to be converted to reason by being nice to them? They are like a woman who is repeatedly beaten by a husband, then goes back to him to cook his dinner, do his clothes, and whatever else they do.

This is the behavior the teaparty folks detested and which ALWAYS results in moving the country leftward,......always leftward....ALWAYS....even when we bitchslapped them. Bohner wants to seem magnanamous, engratiating himself to the left (Rodney King sydrome) while alienating the very people who voted them into power.

How about doing what the conservatives want you to do Bohner! Govern conservatively....move the country back to its conservative roots. By doing so you tell the pelosi's of the world, that her behavior as speaker will not be tolerated at any level,....not by the electorate.....not by the ruling party governing the legislative branch of power. To do otherwise is to affirm Pelosi's methods and madness. Bohner!!!!!!listen to the collective will of the people who loaned you power, and who can remove it from your hands. Being nice to tyrants, while using euphemisms to placate the conservatives will no longer work. We are watching and listening.....we think....we see your ploy for what it is, and by God, we will not allow. This is the Republicans last hurrah, if they do not govern, in all matters, conservatively. We will begin in the year 2012 to rebuild from the ground up, if you do not want to head the warnings of the people. Bohner,....don't screw this one up!

We can only hope that he is as truthful about sharing power as Nancy Pelosi. If he gives an inch there will be a shark frenzy.

“The Democrats repaid Lott’s kindness by drumming him out of office”

They gave a tiny shove and he jumped big!

If he’d had cojones he’d have come back with the Southern Manifesto (from Thurman’s stint as a D) and pointed out that only dems signed the thing, that would be regarded as unacceptably racist today.

Lott had no valid reason to quit.

I'm really beginning to think that the US is a lost cause and that I need to find an island somewhere.

Did you guys READ the article? The article does not say that he is handing the gavel to the RATS. He wants to try to give THE FRESHMEN some more voice.

I recall Boehner telling some leaders from the tea party folks he wouldn’t let them down.

This is a betrayal of the highest order.

Yeah...and their voices are the voices of Socialism.

Every time the R's have reached across the aisle those other voices have put the R's in an arm bar and had their way with them from behind.

Great, share power when we have it by changing the rules - how long do you think it will take the dims to change the rules back the next time they are in power?

Constantly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Maybe if John cries again, Nancy’s gang will kill him last.

You are correct, of course, but remember the Republicans gave him a push also. They were afraid of the racists label with which the Democrats and the media would tar them. The Republicans were always such wooses that political correctness easily controlled them.

The Democrats will protect the Bill Clintons, the Barney Franks, the Charlie Rangels and all the other dirty Democrats but the Republicans must be purer than Caesar’s wife. I am not supporting corrupt Republicans if and when they may appear but we have to stop rolling over to political correctness. If an intelligent, effective, conservative Republican official is discovered to have cheated on his wife one time we must stop drumming him out of office while allowing Barney Frank to run a male prostitution ring out of his apartment. We must stop eating our own.

Conservatives have a very difficult problem. We are trying to do what is best for the country. We are trying to rekindle the vision of our founders of a free moral society with very limited government. We are trying to set a moral example for the future of our kids and our country.

The Left is amoral. They have no values other than the desire for the power they can gain over the rest of us. They don’t want the vision of our founders. They want to destroy that vision and build a mythical workers paradise in its place. That has always produced Hell for the workers, never Paradise, but the the Evil and the Idiots continue to push blindly in that direction.

We want to build. They want to destroy. It is evident which is easier and we had better stop helping them but wounding some of our best soldiers.

Progressivism involves despotic statism that plans to put severe limits on our freedom. There is no compromising on freedom, either we are free or we are chained to the will of big government.

Let’s hope that the Republicans mean that they will share power with any Democrats who want to step across the aisle and help them repeal Obama’s progressivism.
