Giving up smoking may be a New Year's resolution for some, but all US sailors will now have to follow suit, as the US Navy moves to ban its crews from smoking aboard submarines starting Friday.
In a country where fights against Big Tobacco are common, troops deprived of fresh air and natural light for months were surprisingly allowed to smoke in submerged submarines. But no more, after a Pentagon study found the risks of second-hand smoke were severe in those highly confined spaces.
Submarine Forces Commander Vice Admiral John Donnelly ordered the ban aboard 73 US subs, citing health concerns.
"Our sailors are our most important asset to accomplishing our missions," he said in announcing the measure in April.
"Recent testing has proven that, despite our atmosphere purification technology, there are unacceptable levels of secondhand smoke in the atmosphere of a submerged submarine. The only way to eliminate risk to our non-smoking sailors is to stop smoking aboard our submarines."
About 40 percent of the 13,000 US submarine sailors smoke -- double the US national average.

I would have never guessed they were allowed to smoke on a sub.
Me, either. They banned smoking on surface ships years ago. Or at least I think they did.
The smoking area in the engineroom on one of my boats was next to the oxygen bleed nozzles.
The air on a boat is constantly monitored and adjusted.
It is less of a problem than a regular bar.
Sooo, cigerette smoking is banned and pole smoking is now OK. Ugh.
ML/NJ
So now smokers are effected hmmm..... but gay OK
Sad but true.
Yes, they were always allowed to smoke.
There is worse things in the air than the that smoke. At least the smoke is removed from the air with the cleaners.
Since I was eager for a moment of individuality I was more than willing to participate.
I wonder if one can still smoke in boot camp these days?
BTW, I stopped smoking in 2003.
One can’t smoke on sub but one soon will be able to commit sodomy on one...
Seems to me the Navy is promoting sex deviates' activity, while forcing smokers out of the Navy?
I hope they are going to let some of these guys transfer to surface.
Quiting smoking can be no joke for some people. Some of these guys smoke the harshest stuff imaginable.
Even with patches or other strategies. When these guys are cut off and they go under some of these guys may have severe medical reactions. Some need to get this out of their system before they go for a dive.
I am really worried for their safety.
So are fags banned or not?
You have not lived until you spend time in the Radio/ESM compartment with 15 guys smoking cigars.
The makers of Skoal and Days Work applaud this decision.
Do you smoke after sex?
I dunno, I never checked
