Lawmakers distressed by double absence
The Philadelphia Inquirer (AP) ^ | Wed, Dec. 29, 2010 | Angela Delli Santi

TRENTON - A former acting governor and a lawmaker who sponsored the constitutional amendment creating the office of lieutenant governor are among those criticizing New Jersey's top two executives for being out of state at the same time.

State Sen. Richard Codey (D., Essex), governor for 15 months after Jim McGreevey resigned in 2004, said Tuesday that Gov. Christie and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno should coordinate their schedules so one is in the state and can take charge, especially during emergencies.

The absence of Christie and Guadagno - who are on vacation - left Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D., Gloucester), the third-in-command, to deal with a storm that dumped two feet of snow on parts of the state and stranded hundreds on the roads. Hours after being sworn in, Sweeney declared a state of emergency.

"They're both entitled to a vacation, but not at the same time," Codey said. "You sit down, and you work that out. Why do we have a lieutenant governor? So when the governor's out of state for a period of time, like he is now, she or he would cover for him."

The whole point of having a lieutenant governor is so he can act in lieu of the governor. It was irresponsible for Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno leave the country while the governor is, or would be, absent.

I generally love the job that Chris Christie is doing and all, but it was a mistake to not coordinate vacation schedules better with the Lieutenant Governor.

Michael Drewniak, speaking for the governor and lieutenant governor, said emergency services were functioning well across New Jersey

Uh buoy. The state roads are an ungodly mess. As of this morning I saw one (Rt 35 southbound from Deal Rd to the Asbury Circle) that is still closed. The bigger municipalities were drawn in to take up slack on state roads, leaving the towns a mess. I smell a rat.

This may be Gov Christie’s “Katrina” moment. Sad.

I hear that Christie has been hiking the Appalachian Trail and is very easy to reach.

In this case, it was not a matter of coordinating vacations - the Lieutenant Governor went on an unplanned extended visit to her dying father who has taken a sudden turn for the worse in recent days.

The original schedule had them visting family/vacationing at different times.

See post 6. This is the Democrats using a dying man for a talking point.

Thank you for the clarification. But that’s only rumor and her office isn’t confirming, last I knew. In any case, she should have announced it, not left it so shady, IMO.

I feel for her and just wish it had been handled better.

Politically, that makes sense. But she probably didn't want it to become a news item that the old man could hear: "Lt. Gov leaves state abruptly because she thinks her dad's about to die."

The Governor shouldn't have to direct the Dept. of Transportation to do its job during a snowstorm. There should be plans in place, after all, New Jersey gets snow EVERY winter; I know, we lived there for 6 1/2 years.

If there were no phones, or computers, I might say those folks have a point, but for goodness sake, there are still methods of communication available for folks at a distance!

The trouble is that the rats and union work crews were in charge when both were away. Suddenly, horifically poor response by the state is a problem for the Republican governor.
