Special forces wary of 'don't ask, don't tell' repeal
Washington Times ^ | 12/27/2010 | Rowan Scarborough

Special-operations troops think the elite force is facing difficulties by accepting open gays into one of the military's more politically conservative communities.

Interviews with current and former commandos reveal that to maintain unit cohesion of Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs or other elite covert warriors, the military services and U.S. Special Operations Command need to make a special effort to ensure both homosexuals and heterosexuals know the rules of conduct.

"I'm unsure how the Defense Department will define 'openly gay,' " said one Green Beret officer. "I can envision all sorts of new regulations or changes to existing ones, class after class, accusations flying, and more strains on our soldiers. We will spend hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions, to establish the new rules of the road and to implement them."

Of particular interest is how Navy SEALs, the macho sea, air and land commandos who put great emphasis on physical prowess, will accept gays.

"If an open gay does his job, I think he'll be accepted," said retired Rear Adm. George R. Worthington, a former Navy SEAL. At retirement in 1992, Adm. Worthington commanded the Naval Special Warfare Command, the unit that mints new SEALs in a demanding qualification process.

"I don't think there is going to be that many of them that want to sign up for SEALs anyway because of the closeness and the tightness of the training," Adm. Worthington said.

"My opinion is that they're probably more clerical oriented. Medical profession. Corpsmen. Stuff like that."

(snip)

The Pentagon has begun a process expected to last several months to usher in open gays, with the first step the writing of regulations and education program to ensure both homosexuals and heterosexuals know what is expected of them.

We continue to dull the cutting edge of our defense machinery, as we throw sand in the gears, and otherwise reduce its effectiveness with actions that only can be described as counter productive. Already our social experiments in the military have reduced its effectiveness and efficiency a significant amount, in the tens of percent, maybe by 20% or more.

We cut back on needed programs in order to redirect funding to retrofit ships and submarines for women; we have useless training programs for how to wash your hands, diversity training, ethics training, equal opportunity training, integrity in government training, and gay training. Women get a free ticket out if they do not like their job. There is no study of how all this stupidity has affected the military services. It is mindlessly put forth by evil men and women in congress force fitting our armed forces into their version of utopia. Unbelievable!

That's going to leave a mark.

A lot of normal soldiers and sailors are going to have to walk on eggshells to avoid offending the pansies and getting court martialed.

You can almost bet that the pansies will get benefit of any doubt in the altercations which will come of this.

To us, it's stupidity. To the Left, it's a step along a clearly defined plan to destroy the military.

You know what’s really going to make me throw up in my mouth? The endless string of Hollywood movies and TV shows that will now come out about how an openly gay soldier was really an amazing hero - worthy of the MOH - but was instead ostracized by his fellow troops.

Could you imagine if someone had the balls to portray it like it really will be? Openly gay soldiers forming cliques in units, eventually betraying the friendship of a straight soldier by hitting on him, thereby degrading morale and cohesion. That’d be a hoot to see on screen!

Is this really going to be an issue for the special ops guys, though? I mean, are there really going to be a lot of gay guys who (a) want to be SEALs, and (b) are tough enough to make it through training?

It’s not “openly accepting” them. It’s “forcibly imposing them.”

I do think that a lot of the opposition to the repeal of DADT has focused on the unimportant things rather than the things that will actually be a problem.

Facilities, housing, showers, etc. are a clear problem but the media spends their time talking about elite units and unusual circumstances. As if it’s only going to be a problem in those particular situation.

“A lot of normal soldiers and sailors are going to have to walk on eggshells to avoid offending the pansies and getting court martialed.”

I had this problem with WOMEN, let alone gays. Here’s my story:

I was born infantry - retired infantry, too - but I did a brief stint with a National Guard medium girder bridge unit at the request of the state Sergeant Major. (He asked several infantry NCOs to join the engineers to help square them away.)

Everything was fine until the day when it was decided that women would be allowed in this all male unit. They joined the mess, administrative, and maintenance sections - not the bridging platoons where the heavy lifting was done.

Before the women came, we got “the speech.” Be professional. Don’t play grab-ass on the army’s time. Don’t fraternize if they are in your CoC. You get the idea. Well, the very first drill a single female soldier and two males were caught having sex in the maintenance cage. The punishment for the male soldiers was severe (Article 15, with reduction in rank for the buck SGT). The female soldier was let completely off the hook. Seriously. Walking on eggshells, indeed.

Things got worse from there. These women were ALL ABOUT grab-ass with the male soldiers. Most of the guys were in hog-heaven, but I was a very serious soldier - all business. One day, prior to a mission, I was walking through the compound with my nose in a bridge inventory sheet. Ahead of me, I saw a camo body standing in the path. I sidestepped. The camo body sidestepped with me. I stepped to the other direction - so did the camo body. I looked up from my paperwork. One of the young female soldiers was grinning and giggling, obviously blocking my path on purpose, thinking to flirt. I scowled at her and said “Get the f$%k out of my way, Private!” and moved on. Scorned, she ran to her platoon leader and complained that I swore at her. I was forced to apologize. (BTW - as an infantryman, I swear. A lot. That’s the way it is. It was always accepted until this women showed up.)

Next up, a female soldier walked out of the armory without her hat. I was standing with a group of my soldiers planning our next mission. I looked up, saw her, and said, “Where’s your cover, Private?”

“Oh, it’s back inside.”

“Well go back inside and get it.”

If one of my guys had walked outside without his cover on, I would have made him low-crawl back to get it, but all I did in this case was enforce the reg and make her go get her cover. Guess who had to make an apology for “embarrassing” her in front of the male soldiers?

Yep. Me. So I double-timed back to an infantry unit post-haste. Ridiculous.

Your eggshell theory is more accurate than you can imagine.

As my husband (a retired military guy) says, readiness may suffer, but we’ll have “fabulous” uniforms and the grandest parades around!

Too many stories like yours - I’m a JAG, I hear about them all. It was an article of faith when I was on active duty that a competent female JAG trial attorney was a superstar and got preferential treatment when it came time for schools, circuit jobs, etc. Some of them actually were, but many confused b*tchiness with advocacy.

I fully expect what used to be Social Actions and is now MEO (Military Equal Opportunity - yes, your government pays military people to do this job) to be both full of homosexuals and toxically proactive in enforcing this abortion of a policy. I’m okay with how JAG (at least Air Force JAG) will deal with whatever it ends up being, but I know I’m in the minority.

The Querrs are already there, and always have been there, boys. but now we will know who they are, and like any recently empowered minority will enforce the eggshell thing. Considerable fisticuffs will occur and the straight will suffer for it. Life in the Obamanation.

What a gratuitous insult to medics and corpsmen!

My son was an Army combat medic and takes exception
to the Adm’s remark.

I almost wore O.D. diapers, LOL, I know how it works and what is going to happen.

If someone wanted to serve bad enough to stay in the closet the problems wouldn't be so bad, but now they're going to flaunt it. It's a recipe for disaster.
