The snow is causing travel chaos across the eastern US.
A swathe of the US eastern seaboard is braced for an intensifying winter storm that is dumping heavy snow as it sweeps north.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and severe weather warnings are in place from Georgia to Vermont as temperatures continue to plummet.
Blizzards dropping up to 1ft (31cm) of snow are expected to hit New York and parts of New England.
South Carolina had its first Christmas snow since records began in 1887.
L/Cpl Bill Rhyne, of South Carolina Highway Patrol, said people were heeding warnings to stay off the roads.
Transport officials in Washington DC deployed 200 salting lorries, snow ploughs and other equipment to tackle the expected 6in of snow expected across the Mid-Atlantic region.
Blizzard warnings were in effect for Rhode Island and most of eastern Massachusetts including Boston. Forecasters predicted more than 1ft of snow from midday on Sunday until late afternoon.
States of emergency
Up to 18in of snow was predicted to fall on the New Jersey coast, with wind gusts of more than 40mph (64km/h).

Safe TRavels to Everyone and a Happy New Year this holiday season!!
It’s Snowmageddon!! The media will have a stormgasm!!
If you love your dog, restrain it and secure it when you are driving in traffic.
And at 50 miles an hour, it sucks to be the guy behind the truck that dropped the dog, and run over what is left of twitching Fido.

Global varming takes no holidays or prisoners it seems.. brrrrr..
I left Connecticut at 7:10, and drove at a fair clip to get back to Manhattan by 9:30 this morning. Parked in front of my building, took in the luggage, and by the time I came out it was snowing.
So I put the car in the garage, where it will mostly stay until March, and walked home in the beginnings of a blizzard.
We now have only a couple of inches here, but it is snowing pretty solidly.
The worst part of so much snow is getting my driveway plowed in by the plows.
After all that shoveling, the hardest and heaviest part of snow is what the plows dumped in front of my driveway.
Luckily, my Ford Explorer can usually just plow through it......after I of course shovel away several inches from the top of the heap!
Damn that global warming!!!! Where are you when we need you??

DC-New York service has not been affected so far.
I see the guvner of Massachusetts (25 degrees; flurries) has jumped to the head of the line for stimulus dollars by declaring a pre-emptive state of emergency. Guess that’s what they elected him for. Was probably not even born in the winter of ‘69.
It’s in your wallet.
“Thunder snow” predicted for Massachusetts, with snow falling at 2-4 inches per hour.
It’s started here in southern New Hampshire just in the last hour or so. Steady light snow, no wind yet, and visibility is still good.
Real purdy so far...
The winter of 69 was a bitch here in the South as well.
Yes, that is a very recent picture.
this, of course, was back in the day when every tomdickandharry didn't make running your life his business. Yeah those were the days.
