FORT LAUDERDALE — A former Broward Sheriff's Office corrections deputy was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for raping a handcuffed prisoner he was moving from one jail to another.
Charles Edward Floyd, 40, wept openly in court as he addressed his wife and then his mother.
"Baby, I'm sorry, I gotta go. Don't cry for me," he sobbed. "Mom, I love you."

Turned down a plea deal with 5 years of prison. Bad decision. I’m all for tough sentencing, but 30 years for a rape seems unusually long. Sentence will probably get reduced on appeal.
I believe a 12 to 17 year sentence would send a rather clear negative warning to other law enforcement officers. Beyond the sentence, this guy’s life is forever altered. I doubt that’s lost on many officers.
I'd have thrown up, too, when I learned of the lab results. Then I'd have said, "My attorney will be in touch, baby, and how convenient that he'll know where to find you."

If it had been someone you cared about, you’d probably want to kill him. And quite rightly, too.
Often rape is hard to prove. But where it is, I’m all for execution.
Yes, I think forcible rape should basically result in a forfeiture of your life.
Having an orgasm while abusing a terrorized person pretty much puts you out of any right to be among civilized people in my opinion.
While I agree that it should result in the forfeiture of a portion of the perp’s right to be among civilized people, I do not believe it should forfeit all their right to ever be a part of civilized society.

Rape can ruin a life. IMHO it’s the worst crime you can commit against another person after murder. And there is no such thing as “I didn’t mean to” as there can be in killing someone. Given that, I’m all for 30 year sentences on forcible rape even without any extra modifiers. Add doing it under the color of authority, and I don’t mind the term going much higher.

I could see the wife throwing up for a different reason (rape and adultery). But I unfortunately believe it wasn’t for that.
Yes it really is the abuse of power issue that is more important. It tarnishes the overall community’s perception of all officers, the ones that do not do this kind of behavior and don’t deserve this perception.
They are officers of the court, their testimony is always default regarded as truthful, they are armed and have a lot more power than average citizens and especially prisoners. So yes, thirty years is appropriate.
According to the article, the prisoner was being transferred between facilities; therefore, it's unlikely the prisoner was drunk.
Regardless, there's no such thing as consent when one party is in such a position of authority over the other.
I just checked the Florida statutes. Exactly this situation is covered, and it is a first degree felony with a maximum of 30 years. So he just got the maximum.
Using or threatening with a deadly weapon, or using injurious physical force, is a life sentence in a rape.
Being over 18 and damaging the reproductive organs of a girl uner 12 during a rape is a capital offense.

He's an ex-deputy, convicted of raping a prisoner he was transporting. I think there's a very good possibility he could die in jail.

Twelve to seventeen years for you and I is not twelve to seventeen years for a prison inmate. Every day seems like a week when you can’t go about your life and do what you want.
This guy was forty years old. We know that he committed one rape under the color of authority. As some have said, he may have committed more. There’s also the likelihood that he hadn’t.
This guy’s wife thought so much of him that she stood up for him. He was evidently decent to her.
People sometimes do things in life without thinking of the awful impact those actions will have on others. If he had killed this woman, I would have advocated for the death penalty, and to have it carried out in a timely manner.
In this instance, I still think twelve to seventeen years without possibility of early parole, should suffice.
This guy is not an example of a person who has been a problem his whole life, and thus not likely to be able to exist outside prison without causing problems in the future. He evidently was able to for forty years. Then he royally screwed up.
I think thirty years is overkill in this instance, but I have stated that he may only serve around twenty years. That is not that far out of line if true.
This guy had the stupidest (is that a word?) attorney ever born. Letting that guy trade 5 years for 30 with the evidence the DA had is total malpractice. Not that I feel sorry for the SOB Perv. He can rot for 40 years for all I care. Just sayin.
