And Coyotes are now common where I'm at, about 25 miles SW (as the crow flies) of downtown Chicago.

Saw a dead one in the middle of Army Trail Rd (4 lane, heavy suburban traffic) about 2 weeks ago. One of them picked up a friends dog right out of their backyard 10 feet from them this summer.

And just wait till they start interbreeding with the feral dogs...

Yeah its not surprising about seeing one on Army Trail Road. A lot of nice wooded Forest Preserves for them around there.

And luckily our dog is a Lab and weighs 82# so one grabbing her for dinner is out. But she's 'friendly' when she sees another 'dog'. Don't know how she'd react to a Coyote - since it looks like a dog - but I'd rather not take chances. There's always Rabies to think of.

And them mating with Feral Dogs would be a nightmare. Coyotes are loners, Feral Dogs hunt in packs, a crossbred pack would attack almost anything.

Sure are. I've seen coyotes, wild turkeys, and more deer than you can count in my area.

And we're all obligated by the laws of Illinois to be unarmed. Nice.

Yep. But if a few people, children, or pets are attacked there'll be quite a few of those firearm laws violated.

'Illegally' discharge a firearm in village limits to save one of yours, or be attacked by a wild animal?

'Gee whiz, lemme think?... Okay, I'll pay the $75.00 ticket.'

My Village is pretty Firearm Friendly.

What's the County States Attorney like? He's the one you have to worry about.

IMHO The DuPage County States Attorney is an a-hole. A gun grabbing a-hole. (not as bad as Cook County though)

But that's okay. I also know of 'a judge' and I'll judge shop until I get him.

But I doubt it would get that bad, its still basically a Village Ordinance violation for 'illegal discharge'. And it was done for self defense from an attack.

Joe Birkett was pretty good. He publicly announced he wasn't going to prosecute anyone during the 'guns in fanny packs' brouhaha. He told the press that the Illinois Supremes had already decided the issue and it was up to the Legislature to change things, not him.

Birkett just became a Judge and I don't know the new guy.

Ooops, I didn't know that. I only heard the anti gun stuff he's said over the years.

Didn't know he was a judge now either. And that's interesting because he HATES this judge 'I know of'. [I bet they don't 'do lunch':-)]

I'll confess I missed that. I met him a few times back in the day and asked him specifically about our insane gun laws. He pretty much agreed with me but said it was up to the Legislature. Can't argue too hard with that. Of course this was way before McDonald was even being contemplated, pre Heller in fact.

When a friend of mine blew an armed robber away he said Birketts office was wonderful about it and supported the good guy completely. There was never a question about giving my friend any sort of legal hassle.

Trust you to miss the silver lining to the Grey Wolf Cloud, Doughty!

These magnificent animals can be used to guard the border with Mexico. Any decent Grey Wolf worthy of the name, can home in on taco efflatus from 40 miles away! They will do the jobs Mexican wolves are unwilling to take!

They also will come in handy to stop the feral cat populations now ruining bird hunting in many areas. I even predict that SAT and Achievement scores will rise because youngsters will eschew playing hooky in the woods and stay around school.

Doughty, it is high time that a hardened infidel such as yourself realizes that Allah The All-Wise has finally sent us the leader we have needed since 1775! This Grey Wolf thing is just brilliant.

Additionally, I have it on good authority that wolves are always in the mood for good, authentic “Mexican”. (food, of course!)

My youngest brother is a fanatical Whitetail hunter. Two or three years ago he told me that he sat on a deer stand on a wildlife refuge and listened as a pack of coyotes killed a deer. Maybe they were already crossbred with dogs but he says there is no doubt they are hunting in packs.

I am very worried that these Grey Wolves-type predators could develop a taste for reindeer over the weekend.

Merry Christmas!

A friend of mine had a close encounter with a momma and her two cubs over at Kingdom Come this past year.

He was heading up to a geo caching site and spotted the trio coming down the trail toward him. He quickly stepped off the trail and got as far off it as he could, making sure not to make any sudden moves that might set the momma off. She kept a close eye on him, but didn't move toward him, and pretty soon they were out of sight down the trail.

TJ always carries when he goes out in the woods (snakes, rabid animals, etc...) but he wasn't sure if his little .32 was going to do anything other than make that bear really mad. Since then, he has gotten a .44 Magnum for carrying in bear country (which is now most of Kentucky).

I’m glad to hear your friend didn’t have trouble there. I’ll bet he keeps on his toes looking out for such situations. Problem is, I’ll bet a lot of other people aren’t quite so attentive.

I would share his concern over the .32 ammo. I’m glad he came up with something a little more powerful. Hope he never has to use it.

When some little child has their head ripped off by a wolf who will be blamed? The child? There is a reason people killed predators that are around people. What’s with these self-loathing eco-fools? Merry Christmas!
