Collapse - Republican opposition to New START is collapsing
National Review Online - The Corner ^ | 12/21/10 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 12/21/2010 7:54:11 AM PST by Fury

Republican opposition to New START is collapsing. One Senate source just told me the vote for ratification could go as high as 75. Another said, “I don’t know if it will get that high, but it’s starting to tick up there.” As the sense builds that ratification is inevitable, Republicans are lining up to get on the “right side.” Lamar Alexander’s support, noted below, is a crucial sign of which way the wind is blowing, although he’ll probably be the only member of the Republican leadership to vote for it. At least Jon Kyl was able to get more money for modernization and that letter from President Obama making assurances on missile defense. Otherwise, this is a dismaying rout.

I would at least give the new Congress a few months after being sworn in before we write them off completely.

You may be right, but we need to give them a chance to take the oath of office first.

Has white guilt really made these numbnuts willing to sabotage the USA?

notachance...more likely that being prince still means a seat at the table and gated security from the rabble and gruel lines...

We sell our souls to the Russians, but do nothing about the nuclear threats posed by Iran and North Korea. Good Lord, is there one functioning brain cell left in Washington?

12-17-10 - GOP Senator to Dems: If you try to pass DADT, Republicans won't pass START

Of course you are right. START would trash missile defense systems. In effect, what we are trading off with the Russians, we are giving the Chinese for free. And the Russians will cheat before the ink is dry...

Okay just got through. I was very polite and kind with the woman on the phone. She did sound stressed out. Told her what I thought very nice and she said she would pass it on. Some how I have a feeling it will not get passed on. Perhaps I will write a letter?

I’ve been trying to call Isakson’s office too, voice mail boxes in GA and DC are both full, my guess is that they’re just ignoring any new messages, he doesn’t care. I’m pretty sure he’s been offered some kind of “deal” behind closed doors for his vote...that’s how it works.. sent several emails telling Isakson that he is a fool to trust Obama/Russians on Missile Defense...

On FoxNews Sunday, Sen. Durbin said that they knew they had at least 66 votes then.

So, who is surprised the the Pubbies are folding?

That is what they do. That is who they are. They want so much to be liked by the media and the opposition that they will do just about anything. And they know, they know, Lucy is going to pull the football away at every chance.

"While I suspect there is more to this"

Yes there is more to it, such as TN Senators Alexander and Corker are interested in how much of the maintenance and up grade money will be spent at Oak Ridge Natl Labs located in TN while GA Senator Isakson has the same concerns about how much will be spent at Savannah River Labs in GA.

If I had a hard job that needed to be done right, I’d call Reid to do it before I’d call McConnell.

Lindsay Graham is on the right side of this issue. He is making sense as well.

I strongly doubt that this generation has the guts to do what needs to be done.

I’m ready to die to restore the Republic and I don’t even have a family to worry about. It seems like most people are more worried about Christmas shopping deals than securing a healthy future for their children. It’s sickening.
