Senate's Number-Three Republican Announces Support for START (Lamar Alexander Folds!)
ABC News ^ | 12/21/2010 | Matthew Jaffe

Posted on 12/21/2010 7:19:04 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Another GOP senator today came out in favor of the START pact – and it’s no less than the chamber’s number-three Republican.

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-TN, said he will vote in favor of ratification.

“I will vote to ratify the treaty because it leaves our countries with enough nuclear warheads to blow any attacker to Kingdom Come,” Alexander said in a speech on the Senate floor.

“In short I’m convinced that Americans are safer and more secure with the new START treaty than without it,” he noted.

Alexander said he and three other senators had written to President Obama earlier this week asking that the president include funding for nuclear modernization in his budget requests to Congress and yesterday the president sent a reply letter agreeing to the request.

His vote is a big boost for Democrats – the treaty now appears likely to pass later this week, barring a last-minute setback.

Just last Wednesday Alexander had joined a group of a dozen Republican senators to rail against Democrats for trying to pass the treaty during the lame-duck session of Congress.

“This is not the way to do it,” he said last Wednesday at a press conference. “This is not the way to get 67 votes and it’s a reckless way to consider the treaty.”

Today Alexander reiterated his frustration with Democrats for trying to pass the treaty during the lame-duck, as well as passing other matters such as the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal in the midst of the START debate. Alexander called it “a flawed process” that he said has “poisoned the well.”

One direct order to America and its senators fall all over one another to obey.

Perhaps the Senators voting for this need a change in label.
Example:
Scott Brown (R - MA) is now Scott Brown (T* - Russia)
*T = Traitor

Alexander has always been a pantywaist and always looking for opportunities to “cross the aisle”.

He is savvy enought to know how close he can approach the political line without crossing it enough to be thrown out yet.

Alexander was on the amnesty fence when Jorge W. Arbusto was pushing it until citizens would shown up at Alexander’s townhalls and shout him down, putting enough heat on him to make him back down.

I hope Alexander will be thrown out on his pansy butt in 4 years, but then I had hoped that 2 years ago.

Alexander and Corker Will NOT be my choice when their terms are up. I'll vote for a coon dog running Independent first yes even in the general election. Alexander has long been a RINO beltway insider carrying Liberal Republicans water for them. He was elected governor of Tennessee simply because the DEM governor was a felon headed for prison.

Corker is part of the Big Money Fence Straddling Political Machine of Chattanooga. He did not receive my vote for senate. My last vote for Alexander was for governor. Republicans need to learn that-R isn't always the right choice. When W anointed {gave his endorsement} to liberal Goober for replacing Thompson I knew we'd been SOLD OUT by RINO GOP.

Gotta hand it to Obama and the DEMS, they shove their agenda down our throats. Wish Repubs would act the same way.

“Jesse Helms was ‘Senator No’. We need more like him.”

Indeed, we do. We need at least 67 Jesse Helmses in the Senate. (I would settle for even a dozen right now.)

We are safer with fewer weapons because:

The number of targets and their hardening and other defenses are decreasing and will decrease in the future (uh...no)

Surely if we disarm we will show the way, morally, for others to follow suit (uh....no)

If we disarm “they” will feel so less threatened “they” will not plan to attack us (uh...no)

If we have 100 weapons and can cause 100 Hiroshimas (well, maybe 40 if the weapons get through and do not malfunction) it will deter “them” (uh ... better hope so)

START is about deterrence
What about our massive reduction since the last 2 decades ... has made us safer? How have “they” responded in their own weapons development as compared to ours?

hmmmm

What does the US get from START? It’s bargaining from a position of strength - Russia can’t even afford 1 bleeping aircraft carrier, what’re they gonna do, threaten an arms race?

START mean the US scales back its ace-in-the-hole. WHY?? To appease the pacifist Estrogen Troika* (Valerie, Michelle, and Mother Robinson)?

* we need a catchier name for this bunch, BTW .....

Make no mistake about it. Alexander would be against the entire Lame Duck Session had the GOP had both houses and lost to the DEM's. Alexander is nothing more than a political opportunist operative for the DEM's and Rockefeller Republicans yes including Da Bush Klan. Corker is turning out to be much the same. Any way the winds blow.

Amazingly repulsive on the part of these RINOS. I have called Lugar’s office - she said this START treaty is for our safety! I called Corker’s office and they said he hasn’t decided. Yeah, right. They are getting flooded w/phone calls.

I asked why they are handing Obama / Dems a victory and why they are shoving all this legislation down our throats before Christmas. - Dead silence. I told them all to GO HOME and get out of our capital. And asked if the November election meant anything to them. Dead silence. Imagine that. They both were polite but dumb as a box of rocks. I asked why would any Republican continue to agree with the Dems. Corker’s gal said “for the safety of our country”. UGH> GET a clue folks - these people need to be voted out. I told her to start looking for a new job after the next election Corker is up for. Disgusted. Totally Disgusted.

This is only the beginning. Watch the Democrats in the Senate run everything during the next Congress. You’ll swear we didn’t even have an election.

At this point, Start II is a done deal.. The pay-offs have been offered..and accepted. This includes GA Sen. Isakson.

Our only hope is that the next President will withdraw from this treaty in Jan of 2013, just as Bush 43 withdrew from the 1972 ABM treaty exactly 9 years ago this month.

Lamar has been aggravating the snot out of me for many years. I was not going to vote for him this time. The ONLY reason I voted for Lamar was the threat of Obama having 60 votes.

That is not enough reason any more. I will never.
Ever.
Ever.
Ever.
Ever.
Vote.
Rino.
Again.
