A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.
But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.
Hes a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but hes never bitten anyone.
A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.
The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

They should release his name, his address, where his wife works (assuming someone was idiot enough to marry this monster), along with information about where his kids go to school.
“Hawoooooooooo! Hawoooooo!” *pant, pant* “How rrrr oooooooo? I come with oooooooo toooooo? Hawooooooooo!”
If some golden/black lab talked to me, I’d be so happy.
Never heard that one.
This is getting as common as “Dog Bites Man.”
I am waiting for articles on “Dog Shoots Trigger-happy Cop.”
I’ve never met a barking Golden that wants to do anything other than sniff you, then lick you unless you were hurting a family member.
I would be devastated if our Golden was killed by some idiot cop in his own yard. She would do exactly what this dog did, bark and run towards them announcing to the world someone strange was in her yard.
This cop needs to be cleaning puke out of the drunk tank for the rest of his career IMHO.
Like he's a member of the pack. /s
Sue him and the dept. They obviously need some sensitivity training.
Did he (the LEO) yell STOP in dog talk? If it had been a non-English speaking person, wouldn’t he be required to yell STOP in their own language?

The police officer is faced with what looks like an attacking dog.
Hes a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but hes never bitten anyone.
And the police officer knew this how? Is he supposed to be a dog mind reader? The dog acts as though it is going to attack the officer, but via some unknow telepathic ability the officer is supposed to read the dog's mind and determine that the dog doesn't bite, but only acts like it is going to bite.
All this could have been avoided if the owner had kept their dog under control.
Golden Retrievers weight from 65-75 pounds, about what a Germand Sheppard weighs. They are plenty big enough to do serious damage if they become aggresive. A police officer has no obligation to put themseves at risk (of any kind), because a dog owner can't or won't control their animal.
The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didnt, the officer shot and killed...
> So...they can shoot to kill if you dont follow their orders? Wish that went for illegals that dont understand their orders, either.
It also works for Indians that are deaf in one ear wearing earphones and carving totems on the street bothering no one.
Ah, maybe the dog was buying the meat and was caught in the crime. Immediate death sentence.
Another law enforcement jackass looking for trigger time. The dog was just a convenient excuse.
I do not get this. I think a nightstick would be a more appropriate way for a policeman to deal with an aggressive canine. Also nicely self-limiting as a weapon, since if the dog is close enough for you to use it, you’re pretty much, by definition, justified in doing so.
Have the cops all forgotten the possibility of using non-lethal force?
I think the cops use dogs for practice.
He and many of them would shoot you or me just the same.
Wouldn’t want their job but don’t trust them any further than I could throw you by your eyelashes from here.
The cop probably would have shot the meat guy if he hadn't used all his bullets on the dog. It's a good thing there were no kids that ran toward him.
I don’t think it’s the right thing to do to release the name of his wife and other such information, but yes, his name should have been published so people could know from whom to stay away. Stupidity can be lethal as that poor golden found out. Dumbass! (him, not you)
LOL
Our main postman has trained my retirever dogs this way. Now they are the biggest USPS fans and "attack" the substitute postal peps who mace them (or don't deliver the mail that day).
Back in the summer, there was a thread on FR where a North Carolina shot a four month old kitten because he perceived it to be a threat to his life.
If a cop doesn't recognize the difference between a golden retriever and German Sheppard, he should be laughed off the police force.
