A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.
But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.
Hes a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but hes never bitten anyone.
A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.
The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

I have had unpleasant experiences with poorly-trained dogs, but there is no reason to go into detail there. I have also been barked at by a Golden, but I found the experience completely different. They have teeth, but they don’t have the temperament, at least none I have ever seen has shown the desire to injure someone. The cop was way out of line unless this Golden was completely different from the dozens of gentle ones that I’ve seen.
I keep telling people, unless your being attacked by hordes of AIDs infected cannibals, DO NOT CALL THE COPS.
Leave the cop calling to the shut-ins and old ladies that need babysitting.
Unfortunalty most americans do not speak English very well either..

Hound...Bit...I cracked myself up.....
Again, your entire argument rests on a charging dog respecting property lines. The law does not require that a charging dog cross property lines before someone can react to the attack.
I do not shoot arbitrarily, but I will shoot when attacked ... by a dog or a man. I don’t care, and the law doesn’t care, if the attack is staged from the attacker’s private property or not.

Is he one of those police chiefs that make $185,975 per year?
It's that simple.
You happen to have a door delivery "privilege" not otherwise available to all Americans. And all you do is kvetch about it.
That's the heart of an entitlement mentality.
How do mailmen survive on a daily basis with a gun?
The question isn’t whether it will stop the dog ... the question is whether the dog was clearly restrained from the perspective of the cop. If the restraints are invisible, it is reasonable for the cop to react as if the dog was not restrained.

I believe the family should have had the dog restrained or tied up. To let it run free is not good for the dog or the community. After having been attacked by a dog before I would have to say I would also not trust any dog running at me barking to be a friend. And if there was no other method of control I would drop the dog with a shot to protect myself.
Just because you love dogs doesn’t mean you should expect people to let them act as they wish. Too many people are mauled by dogs of all breeds.
Thinking postal workers are disarmed can be a grievous mistake.
No, I didn’t change, the USPS apparently did. Affirmative Action and all of that.
Most of my life I jogged to keep in shape I've had all kinds of dogs come after me never once got biten. The dogs and I both had fun. Now that I am retired I run a little lawn service to keep busy, again I get to meet all kinds of dogs most of which don't like me since I am on there property. But that does not stop me from doing my job. Never got seriously bitten and never had to seriously hit the dog either. Pick up a stick and most dogs will beat a hasty retreat. I firm "Get outta here" in a loud voice works too. Even a good "Boo" with arms raised stops a good dog dead in it's tracks. 99.9% percent of the dogs one meets want to be good dogs and liked my their human "friends" to bad the reverse is not true.
Who cares?

A Golden?
A GOLDEN????????
I cross the street to be on the side of the street where a Golden is!!! There isn’t a friendlier dog —— and I am a cat person!
A charging golden retriever that appeared so fierce that a cop’s only reaction is to shoot it? That’s the most absurd thing I read here today.
Deep dark secret at USPS is they have a large number of black employees. They always have had. It is the most integrated large institution in the nation ~ and every single one of them has a perfect track record when it comes to obeying the law.
No felons need apply. Too many speeding tickets can get you removed as well.
Your problem is YOUR problem.
I perfer to hold the police to the same standard that I am held to. We both know that if a civilian acted like this cop, the cop would arrest the civilian. I do not believe that some animal are more equal.
My father was a postman for 30+ years. He spent 17 of those years walking routes.
Additionally, he carried a small spray can of mace (it wasn’t called mace - I don’t recall what the name of the stuff was, but it had the same effect as mace) on has bag or person, just in case....
He once told me in all that time, he’d used it once.
He was good with dogs (we had our share at home over the years), and they were apparently good with him.
He knew his stuff.
