Cape Wind has outlasted a decade of government review, a slew of court brawls and fierce opposition from mariners, fishermen, Indian tribes and Kennedys just to win the right to sell its wind-fueled electricity.
Now, all it needs are customers.
Last month, the nation's first offshore wind farm nailed down its first buyer when the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities approved a deal that sees Cape Wind selling half its power to National Grid, the state's largest electric utility.
But the other half of the Cape Wind project's electricity remains available with no obvious takers, raising the possibility of a smaller project with pricier power.
The top prospect for Cape Wind is the state's second-largest electric utility, NStar. But NStar is uninterested and says it can find cheaper renewable power elsewhere.
"It's not that we're for or against Cape Wind at all," said NStar spokeswoman Caroline Allen. "We just want to make sure that we are promoting renewables in the region ... but also being mindful of costs for our customers."

and at twice the price!
It doesn’t matter what’s cheapest. I thought we’re “saving the planet” here!??
You Liberals say we MUST use wind and solar, so you’re damwell gonna use it too and pay more for it just like you expect the rest of us to do!
Who could ever have foreseen this? /s
Obviously we need to subsidize it... it’s for the children. < /s >
We need Federally mandated wind power care! ( Damn peasants don’t know what’s good for them!)
Not only is it too expensive, but evidently it’s more expensive than other “green power,” which I’m sure is already more expensive and unreliable than most.
But presumably they get paid by hapless utilities that are still more stuck on coal and dirty power than they are. I have read that our Vermont utility was being paid by someone in Massachusetts because they use landfill methane, but the payments were reduced this year as the other utilities catch up.
So they need to buy designated green power. Just preferably not the most expensive green power.
Everyone must pay exorbitant costs for electricity in order for liberals to feel good about themselves.
That’s pretty expensive “self esteem”.
I say get Reid, Pelosi, and Obamma mamba jamma lenin Khomeini to fly a kite and hook their genitals to a key with a nice piece of wire, when lightning hits he aftermath will make their respective parts green..
How could this happen unless someone is using more than their fair share of the wind and driving up the cost!!
It WILL be the future after Obambi out-laws Coal and Oil fired power plants.
Next time the demoncrats have the power, they will do it.
You Liberals say we MUST use wind and solar, so youre damwell gonna use it too and pay more for it just like you expect the rest of us to do!
But, I thought it would be free financed on the tax backs of the wealthy? No?
LOL.
Liberalism: Someone craps their pants and we ALL have to wear diapers.
Yeah, and they're gonna have lots and lots for money to pay for it! We are bankrupting our grandkids to indulge the whims of a handfull of babyboomer activists. This is rank insanity.
If electric companies could find a cheaper wayon their own to produce electricity from wind and solar, in a FREE MARKET it would have been done and by now have driven the coal and gas power plants out of business.
FREE MARKET RULES!
Rule 1: Keep leftists away from math, science, engineering and economics. It is way, way, WAY beyond their diminutive ability to comprehend.
OK, I give up! I hate to ask a dumb question, and I fancy myself a pretty fair student of science, but just where does all that unused power go? Is it just never produced and what’s being utilized at half is the potential for creating power?
