Sarah Palin Calls Tax Deal ‘Lousy,’ Dismisses her 2012 Poor Polling
National Review ^ | 12/20/2010 | Katrina Trinko

Sarah Palin harshly criticized the Obama-GOP tax compromise in an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, calling it a “lousy deal” and saying that lawmakers “can do better for the American public.”

“It is better to wait until they [the new Congress] are seated,” Palin argued, “and get a good deal for the American public than to accept what I think is a lousy deal, because it creates a temporary economy with even more uncertainty for businesses and it does increase taxes.”

Palin also condemned President Obama for his prior opposition to extending the tax cuts for those making $250,000 or more, noting that Obama had been “so adamant about not allowing the tax cut extension to take place for job creators.”

“He, you know, can term it compromise. I term it flip flop,” Palin said.

“I was thankful that he did,” she added, “but it’s still not good enough because our economy is … at a breaking point and we are on a path towards insolvency if we do not start incentivizing businesses to start producing more in our own country.”

Asked about a possible presidential run in 2012, Palin said she would not make her decision for months, calling the decision a “prayerful consideration” because of the “brutal” sacrifices public service requires.

“My consideration is for my family,” Palin said, “whether this would be good or not good for the family, whether it would be good or not good for the debate and the discourse in this country, and just trying to get the lay of the land and see who else is out there who would be willing to make those sacrifices.”

She also dismissed a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll that showed that 59 percent of Americans wouldn’t vote for her if in 2012 if she was for the Republican nominee and running against Obama.

“A poll number like that, it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, that doesn’t look really pretty today,’” Palin answered, “but a primary is months and months in the process, and there are thankfully many debates. And if I were to participate in that contested primary … I would be in it to win it.”

But if she does run, don’t expect to see Palin shedding any tears on the campaign trail.

Noting that she “respect[s] John Boehner because he has worn his feelings on his sleeve on things that are so important to him,” Palin said that she was willing to give the House Speaker-elect a “pass” on his public tearing-up displays. But she added that society had “a double standard” on crying politicians.

“I’m sure if I got up there,” Palin said, “and did a speech and I started breaking down and cried about how important it is to me that our children and our grandchildren are provided great opportunities, I’m sure that I would be knocked a little bit for that.”

This gives me pause...until I consider who commissioned the poll.

Secondly, it's the end of 2010--not 2012. A lot can happen over the next year or two.

If she continues to handle herself as she did in that interview, that gap will narrow very quickly. People will quickly find out that she is not as stupid as she came across in the McCain debachle.

with Sarah I am less concerned about the poor polling than I am with the fact that the GOP Primaries are still tilted heavily towards early open primary states, and the fact that we have no idea what sort of un-Presidential reality TV nonsense members of her family will engage in between now and then.

Sarah, unfortunately, is playing into the media's hands. This constant back and forth is going to cause a new, more dangerous syndrome:

Palin Fatigue Syndrome.

She peaked early. Also, agree with the other poster about the Palin family reality shows — this will cause voters to dismiss her.

We need someone else (and no, I don’t mean Huckabee, etc.)

Pardon me for saying so, but horse apples! Since when it un-Presidential to live real lives and act like real human beings? Was Sarah and Bristol's trip to Haiti to sit with Cholera victims recently also un-Presidential reality TV nonsense?

No she hasn’t and no we don’t. If she runs, we shall see whether she has peaked too early...if she runs.

Dancing with the Stars came perilously close to being un-Presidential. And I am not entirely sure that Bristol will not turn up in the Big Brother house before too long.

Certainly those who have never watched the show.

For one thing, Bristol is not a possible Presidential Candidate. For another thing, dancing is a perfectly normal human activity and the fact that one’s child goes outside her comfort zone and competes on a dancing show has exactly zero to do with that child’s mother’s qualifications for elective office. Want to guess what people do at Presidential Balls? They dance! And your other comment about Bristol is completely baseless and unfounded.

Bingo! It's a terrific show that will likely do wonders for Alaska's tourist industry.

If you let polls form your decisions for you, you're destined for another McCain/Obama.

Mush you doggies...Woo...Hoo..

If people would bother to read Sarah Palin’s books, they would learn she is quite intelligent. The problem is the people who listen to the “intellectual elites”. They are the ignorant ones. IMO, the “intellectual elites” are not smart. They’ve been talking amongst themselves and lying to each other for so many years that they’ve actually dumbed themselves down in the process. One only has to look at the condition of our country with the “intellectual elites” in power for proof.

The problem with our Republican primaries is that we let traditionally blue states to choose our candidate. We should start the election season with a center of America primary with North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

Why should Iowa and New Hampshire get all the attention. Make the process two or three Super Tuesdays at most.

Sarah, unfortunately, is playing into the media's hands.

You are giving the media way too much power over yourself. Sarah Palin is playing the media to near perfection. The template is Palin is dumb because the "media" is smart. It's the other way around. We have to get over the idea that the "media elite" and the "beltway elite" are our betters. They are not! We are superior to them.

Nearly every one of the other candidates are in Washington, DC screwing up my country. Are they “acting” presidential?

BTW, Bristol is a fine young lady. She isn’t running for anything.
