The Harrowing Tale of an Amtrak Train Stuck on the Rails for 10 Hours (Baltimore-Philly)
The Gawker ^ | 12-17-10 | Stephen Tschida

Posted on 12/18/2010 4:24:33 PM PST by dynachrome

A train from Baltimore to Philadelphia stalled on the tracks for ten hours last night. With doors locked and electricity waning, passengers cried and fought for emergency rations. A local news reporter happened to be on board, and tweeted it.

D.C. reporter Stephen Tschida, of ABC affiliate WJLA-TV, was on the train as rations fell short, cold set in, and passengers swelled into an anarchic mob. As @ABC7Stephen, he chronicled it all, 140 characters at a time. Here is our brave correspondent's story, unabridged and arranged chronologically:

I mostly meant that it’s hard to believe that an American train passengers could be stranded for ten hours. AMTRAK has buses.

Where’s Willie Green when one needs a booster to extol the wonders of public rail?

Willie's been banned. Don't worry; I'm sure Willie is somewhere on the internet threatening to stab someone in the butt with his pitchfork.

I’m guessing most people aren’t actually reading the article because it’s not like he was 8 hours into it and whining . . . he almost lost it in the first hour.

Locked inside a stalled Amtrack train between Baltimore and Philly? Is any more proof of the existence of Purgatory necessary?

Hilarious story, but I know I’d be upset if they broke down for hours and didn’t tell us what was happening.

I think a lot of business screw up on customer service because they don’t keep them informed. People are almost always happier when they are told what is happening.

A wire fell down across the track, shorting out and stopping all service. When they did get the train going, they were at reduced power, again because of the electrical issues.

It was very cold, and I guess with everything run by electricity on the amtrak, they couldn’t keep the heaters working.

Still, I wonder if the reporter wasn’t more freaked out than most of the other passengers. At one point he’s afraid the train will back out over a broken bridge and they will plunge to their deaths.

Willie's been banned.

Again?

Didn't he get banned in the great Rudy purge of '08?

“didn’t tell us what was happening.”

No cellphones? heck, he tweeted how awful everything was. Maybe he raided the bar car too often!

I bet they wish they were so lucky. All that was available on that train was bed bugs!

This happened to me in 1960. Louisville (Fort Knox) to the Burgh coming home for Christmas.

Army guys gave those heavy coats to the elderly. 14 hours of this.

This is insane to happen today.

Baltimore and Philadelphia? I’m thinking a certain demographic here. Most of whom could miss a meal. I don’t even want to think about what constitutes Amtrak Emergency Rations, much less fight over it.

I was thinking of certain demographic, too, but it wasn't a racial one. But it did wear a suit. America has an anus, it's on that stretch of track somewhere.

Of course, it could have been worse. It could have been Jersey.

It's pretty hard to believe that there was nothing around within 10 hours of that train.

Apparently there was one stop and I assume there was heat and shelter available. COMMON SENSE SAYS.....EVERYONE should have been told to get off.

I am not a Twitter nor FB fan (I still don’t think anyone cares if I am taking a bowel break) but I have to admit this is quite a compelling log.

You underestimate yourself. Lots of people care.

Well, not really...
