The Senate has just voted to end debate on a bill that would lift the ban on gays serving openly in the military, essentially clearing the measure for passage and signature by the president.
Lawmakers voted 63 to 33 to end debate on the current policy, put in place by former president Bill Clinton, informally known as "don't ask don't tell."
The Senate could vote on final passage of the measure as early as today but it will most likely happen on Sunday or Monday.
"We are on the verge of ending 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' for good," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said after the vote "This is one of those moments in our history when we stepped up and squared our policies with the values this nation was founded upon."

As I posted on another thread, I’ll no longer advise young people to sign up. I’m sure there are many others who feel the same. The military can troll for their new recruits in the gay bars.
Please revise and extend your remark of above to be clear.
Why would they block the DREAM act, but press on for the gays? Is it possible that the gays have more power than we ever imagined? I want to see the list of the R’s who bent over for this.
so what is the policy now? ask and do tell?
One of the worst things they could do
Interesting, the Military as an Institution has just been co-opted, should we continue to pour hundreds of billions into it?
As for the political issue, watch, the “real” vote will be 51-49 with the scum GOPers who voted for this motion to come to a vote then voting against it so they can proclaim “I did not support it”.
Democrats= party of perversion and communism. Now making the US a nation not worth fighting for.
Kinda gives new meaning to never leaving your buddies behind......
Gays have more money than Latinos.
our finest do deserve better, than having to troll gay bars.
Is there any way they can reverse it? It would require passage of a new bill, and Obama would veto it for sure.
So I think we're stuck with it for two years, at least.
isn’t it funny to see social libs on this board?
that poster digs race baiting too...small wonder eh?
Yes, we're taking names today. I heard there were four. My guess would be the Maine sisters (Snowe and Collins), Brown, and Kirk.
This isn’t about gays or rights. This is the liberal agenda telling regular Americans that our value system of family, God, country, and hard work is outdated and must be abolished in favor of the new. The fact that we can’t stop it and our congresspeople are ignoring our demands as well as common sense is the evidence that something very evil and rotten has infected us as a nation.
Wrong, imo. Spoken from a Dad of a Marine. Open gays are going to find a hard road to travel. Ultimately, they will learn the truth of the adage “Be careful what you ask for.”
They (the homos) have not thought this all the way out.
I can image now the gay pride parades on military bases.
Jim Thompson wouldn’t stand for it! But then, Jim Thompson is da MAN!
You are a useful idiot.
Time for a BIG tea party.
