Bradley Manning's Prison Hell
Daily Beast ^ | December 17, 2010

Posted on 12/17/2010 6:53:47 AM PST by La Lydia

The last time Bradley Manning saw the world outside of a jail, most Americans had never heard of WikiLeaks. On Friday, Manning, the man whose alleged unauthorized release of hundreds of thousands of classified documents put the website and its controversial leader, Julian Assange, on the map, turns 23 behind bars. Since his arrest in May, Manning has spent most of his 200-plus days in solitary confinement...his attorney, David Coombs, revealed key details about Manning’s imprisonment and kind gestures from his family that provided a bit of comfort in the inmate's otherwise extremely harsh incarceration....

Manning asked for a list of books, which his family bought for him... Decision Points, by George W. Bush Critique of Practical Reason, by Immanuel Kant Critique of Pure Reason, by Immanuel Kant Propaganda, by Edward Bernayse The Selfish Gene, by Richard Dawkins A People’s History of the United States, by Howard Zinn The Art of War, by Sun Tzu The Good Soldiers, by David Finkel On War by Gen. Carl von Clausewitz

Manning is being held at Marine Corps Base Quantico, in Virginia. He spends 23 hours a day alone in a standard-sized cell, with a sink, a toilet, and a bed. He isn’t allowed sheets or a pillow, though First Lieutenant Brian Villiard, an officer at Quantico, said he is allowed bedding of “non-shreddable” material...

For an hour every day, a television is wheeled in front of his cell and he’s allowed to watch TV, including news...

The conditions under which Bradley Manning is being held would traumatize anyone...He lives alone in a small cell, denied human contact. He is forced to wear shackles when outside of his cell, and when he meets with the few people allowed to visit him, they sit with a glass partition between them...

He’s in solitary also to pervent him from further contact with his sources or outlets for classfied information. He has not talked and revealed all..so even giving him a TV and any visitors is a bit weak in my opinion. He should have been tried and found guilty and sentenced to death by now..maybe then he would talk to save his sorry butt.

The question of whether Wikileaks is an anti-American conspiracy is not relevant to the case of Bradley Manning.

Not at all. I was just talking about how most Americans know little of WikiLeaks. WikiLeaks is in a quasi-legal area with freedom of speech involved, and some leaks have provided IMHO a net positive value to the world (climategate, Australian censorship). Even some of the cable leaks have been beneficial for us. Manning is just a traitor, off with his head.

I find this case very puzzling. I have heard Manning’s rank listed as Private and as Private First Class, so I don't know which is correct. BUT a Private is an E1 and a PFC is an E2. The two lowest ranks in the US military. Private the day you join and PFC upon graduation from basic training. What really puzzles me is, how in God's name did an E2 get the security clearance to access the stuff Manning is supposed to have leaked?
This whole thing has a funny smell. At least to me.

So exactly how did this reporter expect Bradley to be treated when he was caught?

It all seems fair and proper to me.

LOL!

That’s NOT harsh confinement. That is the Ritz Carlton compared to most County Jails in the US.

A Communist/Socialist book, through and through.

Manning’s highest rank attained was E-4 (Specialist). He was busted down 1 grade for assaulting another soldier. He is now a PFC (E-3).

Rank has no bearing on whether or not you have a clearance, but it does have bearing on what you can access. Now it seems nobody is minding the store. Having any kind of uncleared recording media in a SCIF is a huge no-no. Cell phones, iPods, iPads, Crackberrys are all verboten. Thumbdrives and rewritable cd/dvds have to be marked for proper classification and checked before going in and coming out. And this traitor wouldn’t have had the courier orders necessary to do that anyway.

Another thing that bugs me is the fact he even had a clearance. His anti-DADT activities were known prior to his enlistment, but didn’t seem to turn up in the DIA investigation (which would have precluded him from getting a clearance).

So nothing seemed to have worked right. I just don’t get it. And then the government took forever to seal up the security breach! Whiskey tango Foxtrot, over?!

I agree, I believe there is a great deal more here than one Private with access to all sorts of classified information. Highly classified info is usually compartmentalized and this guy seems to have had access to everything, it just doesn't make sense.

In a sane world, he would have gotten the firing squad. I think Barry’s keeping him alive and on the last hour of his term as president will pardon the POS.

“It’s not even Sheriff Arapaio’s pink boxers jail.”

I suspect Manning’s got his own pink boxers.

Better conditions than the traitor deserves.

I suggest a Saddam wannabe as his jailor. It is time these mush heads learn the difference between traitor and patriot.

If you can’t do the time, then don’t do the crime.

It stinks to make an astronomically stupid decision and then suffer the consequences, Mr. Manning. Perhaps your mommy and daddy forgot to teach you that. Their bad.

The pervert, first class, must have been a cryto weenie. The encryption stuff and clearances were always in a separate category.

The "NEED TO KNOW" would never have applied to the material in question unless the little weasel was active in the encryption/decryption stage.

Some numb-nut that allowed THAT to happen should also be up on charges.

In WWII, he'd have had a short walk to a badly damaged wall, and "Any last words?"...
