ABC News has learned that Richard Holbrooke, the US Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, has died.
On Friday, Holbrooke was rushed to the hospital with a torn aorta. He went through more than 20 hours of surgery. Earlier this evening, speaking at the US State Department, President Obama sang Holbrooke's praises and called him "a tough son of a gun."
Holbrooke, 69, was a former ambassador to the United Nations and served as chief negotiator at the Dayton Peace Accords, which ended the war in Bosnia.
The New Yorker's George Packer wrote a nice story about Holbrooke last year, which you can read HERE.
A Democrat avoiding the estate tax increase next. Oh the lengths they go to.
So sad that one of the last images in his mind was Hillary.
Hmmmm, Dickie, can you just get over your ruptured aorta???
The notion of de mortuis nil nisi bonum, not speaking ill of the dead, reflects on our conduct, not that of the deceased. You don’t kick someone when they are down. You don’t beat up someone who can’t defend themselves. That’s who we are and doing so hurts us.
I am a Viet Nam vet and have a lot of problems with diplomats. Holbrooke’s policies are far left of mine. But we can voice that belief without personalizing it at this point. In the end, Holbrooke had no policy. He voiced a policy, that of the Democratic left and I strongly disagree with it. When the Democrats were not controlling the White House, he was out of the diplomatic corps and for good reason. The reality is that policy will not change with his passing and someone else will step up and support Obama/Clinton dogma.
I am sorry for his family’s loss. I did not like his politics.
Sounds like a badly written ending to a Movie of the Week. I don't believe it one bit.
Power. The ultimate aphrodesiac.
Bear Bryant retired at 69, dropped dead three weeks later.
I don’t believe the bit about the “last words” being about stopping the war in Afghanistan, either. Just a tad too politically correct.
Although who are we to judge what someone’s last words are. I would hope that they would have been: “God, please forgive me.”

And, I suppose Bob Woodward was there to record them?
Wonderful post.
Merry Christmas, FRiend.
Prayers for Special Representative Holbrooke, and for his family.

Actually Holbrooke was part of the insider club — AGI Lehman Brothers the socialist left NWO experiment gone wrong...or going right??? - he was one SOB.
If and I emphasize if - he said to stop the goings on in Afghanistan (Obummer’s catch and release is not a war) then we should stay.
One of the U.S.A.’s Chief Jihad enablers has died, before the global jihad and world wide muslim caliphate could be established...............................what a pity.
Yeah, and the remaining Commies didn't shed any tears when Reagan died. Your point?
Apparently the bomb explosions were loud enough to convey some sense into the heads of Serbia's leadership.
I can sort of understand that -- one can have more respect for a foe who stubbornly fights on than for one who quickly gets the "Don't Mess With The US" message and gives up, notwithstanding the fact that the the latter is preferably in purely practical terms.
But that’s not why Holbrooke said what he said, in comparing the Serbs to the Vietnamese communists. See post 177 by Doctor13.
Holbrooke was a Serbophobic racist, and anti-Orthodox Christian to the extreme!!!!
But—as I said—God will judge him, not me!!!!
You’re a hoot. To compare Reagan with Holbrooke is so far out there it’s bizarre. It is digusting.
Reagan said this about the greatest militray man of the 20th century—a moral man and a SERBIAN patriot:
“...In the mountains of Yugoslavia, in the jungles of Vietnam, wherever men and women have fought totalitarian brutality, it has been demonstrated beyond doubt that both freedom and honor suffer when firm commitments become sacrificed to false hopes of appeasing aggressors by abandoning friends.”
Hey there newby-—those bombs ordered by Clinton and his henchman Weasely Clark and the rest of the NATO obsolete goons along wiht the approval of Hellbroke - and were falling on Christian churches and schoolhouses.
Feel better now...?
If only he had been in Cuba, their State of the Art Medical System might have saved him.
Serbs loved Reagan, he was one of the few who acknowledged the sacrifices of Serbs and Draza Mihailovic with their struggle for freedom from both the communists and the fascists.
