MINNEAPOLIS A storm that spanned parts of eight states continued to dump heavy snow in the upper Midwest on Sunday, collapsing the Metrodome in Minneapolis and forcing numerous road closures.
The storm was moving eastward a day after it dumped 20 inches of snow in some places. A Sunday NFL football game between the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings had already been pushed to Monday because the Giants couldn't get to Minneapolis to play when the inflatable Metrodome collapsed Sunday. It's uncertain when that game will now be played.
A blizzard warning was in effect Sunday for Chicago and much of northern Illinois, all of Iowa, large sections of southern Minnesota and Wisconsin, and smaller areas in North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri and Michigan, according to the National Weather Service. Most of the rest of the region was under a winter storm warning or a hard freeze watch.
Wisconsin authorities issued a statewide no-travel advisory Saturday, citing blizzard and winter storm warnings in nearly every county.

“Minn. Metrodome collapses in Midwest blizzard”
Global Warming is ruining football.
I tell you, much more of this Global Warming and we’re all going to find ourselves in a new ice age!
Wife and I went out on the lake in our fishing boat last Friday...
this has happened before....the roof is basically a soft tent and the dome is pressurized to keep it inflated.
no being a football fan, I thought it was scrapped after the Twins moved out a little over a year ago after the 09 division series.
Yep. We haven't had a lot of snow here in North-Central IL, but the blowing is causing white-out conditions. Wife didn't drive in to Rockford today for work. Another employee for the same business in DeKalb tried to get there from Rochelle, but stopped in Creston, 6 miles away, in a panic. She's back home now. Anyone trying to drive outside of residential areas should think again.
Yes, for decades, global-warming models have been predicting that increased evaporation off the Pacific would lead to increased snowfall in the Upper Midwest, you can’t use an individual event like this to claim as support. Fact is, this might have happened even without global warming.
If it isn't global warming, then it is the lockouts next season.
Symbolic of the Vikings’ year.
Intentionally deflated. From this article:
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2010/12/12/snowstorm-sunday-metrodome-roof/
Officials at the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, which operates the dome, said two triangle panels on the north end of the stadium are damaged. Officials intentionally deflated the dome.
“You deflate it so you don’t lose the entire roof,” said Bill Lester, executive director of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission. “But that’s all we’re going to talk about until we get some more detail.”
First, “Global Warming” crashes the Metrodome roof....then later this week....Disney World will be hit by temps in the mid-20’s and possible wind chills near zero.
Where is Al Gore when you need him....
Favre gets another day to heal to keep his streak alive.
The game may be moved to another dome somewhere..Detroit, St. Louis, or Indy. Giants did not bring long undies so can’t play outdoors at TCF stadium (UofM stadium).
It’s way too cold here to play football outside anyway.
it should have an electric heating element. If properly powered it could handle it
With the storm dumping nearly two feet on parts of the Twin Cities, the snow was accumulating on the Metrodome roof Saturday night.
“It was an extraordinar situation involving Mother Nature that the Dome’s roof couldn’t handle,” Terwilliger said.
He said normal procedures were being followed Saturday, with workers on the roof itself using steam and hot water to melt and remove snow. Also, the heat inside the Dome was turned up and hot air was pumped into the in-between layers.
“That didn’t work,” Terwilliger said.
“Then it got dangerous for personnel up on the roof and we decided for the sake of safety to take them off,” he said.
So, now I won’t find out if I am in my Fantasy Football playoffs until later in the week? AP has been causing me problems all year.
Favre needs two more games to get the 300th consecutive game.
