Demari DeRue is a 16-year-old junior at Columbia Falls High School in Columbia Falls, Montana. She is an honor roll student, a cheerleader and a hunter. On Monday, December 13th, she faces expulsion from school because, after a recent weekend family hunting trip, she inadvertently left her unloaded and secured hunting rifle locked in her trunk, and then drove to school Monday morning and parked on school property. The expulsion could be for as long as a year, but any expulsion could seriously hurt Demari’s college plans. But the facts of this case show the unreasonable nature of the “zero-tolerance” mindset. Further, both federal and state law give discretion to school officials to modify the expulsion provisions in the statutes. The no firearms rules were created to punish students who present a danger or who intend to commit crimes; not to punish an upstanding honor student who simply had a memory lapse. Further, it was Demari who voluntarily informed school officials when she remembered she had left the rifle locked in the trunk of her car. It is appalling that Demari is facing expulsion because of her honesty. The hearing for Demari will be Monday, December 13, at 6:00 p.m. (plan to arrive by 5:00 p.m.), in the Administration Building at Glacier Gateway Elementary School, located at 501 sixth avenue west, in Columbia Falls. If at all possible, please attend this hearing and support Demari. Politely tell school district officials that blind adherence to unreasonable anti-gun policies does not make our kids safer, and in this particular case, would be a grave injustice. Let them know that the only reasonable outcome of this hearing is to completely purge Demari’s high school record of this incident, so she won’t be in a position of trying to explain a “gun crime” to firearm-averse review committees considering college and scholarship applications. Also, please contact high school officials, the superintendent and the school board and politely let them know that you support Demari, that you oppose any action to expel her and that a complete expungement of her record is in order. Since the rifle was lock out of sight, trunk, how did the “school” find out it?
...contraband-sniffing dogs were at school.
OK, I should have read the article first.
The student ,once realizing that she forgot to remove the rifle from her car informed the school . I guess that honesty does not always pay off. The school leadership need to be replaced ,to stupid to be running a school.
Time to finish school in the safety of her parents home.
That’s one good choice. There are more. Dump her high school before they expel her. Option #2 - select a good local private school. Option #3 - She is in the middle of her junior year and is a successful student. Take the GED and start college locally, establish a good GPA, and then transfer to the college of her choice.
The school loses money if she’s not enrolled.
They deserve to lose the money.
Home school her. You’ll do her a service, and the school a disservice.

Demari has learned an important lesson: NEVER confess an error of any kind to a leftist. All public schools are controlled by the left.
The left is unworthy of the honesty and respect normal people wish to treat others with and be treated with themselves. F’em. Never admit anything when the left has a voice in the outcome.
I am beginning to think that the idea of all this security theater in our schools, with armed police going through student lockers with police dogs, is not so much to locate contraband as it is to accustom future citizens to the idea that they may be searched at any time, and that any resistance to this is futile.
Instead of turning herself in, she should have just driven home, or somewhere off campus, and walked back to school. Or, called her parents to come and switch out the vehicle with another. NEVER GIVE IN TO THE ADMINISTRATIVE LOSERS!

I grew up in Montana. Many a day, I would take either my shotgun, to go duck hunting after school, or my rifle, to go elk or deer hunting after school in my truck. My, how times have changed! (And, not for the better!)
Oh, by the way, the guns were in a gun rack, in plain view, for everyone to see!

Sad to say, but you are right. You very aware of your actions when dealing with The Left, they do not take prisoners. The rarely use descretion when it comes to hot button issues.
I would suggest that they get other students and parents together and holld a rally refusing to send their kids to school if the school doesn’t allow the girl to return! She did the honest thing but I think she should have just told the school she needs to go home for something and remove the rifle quietly. Maybe thats what she was trying to do when she told them.
Zero tolerance is killing us. It is an outgrowth of political correctness, which is the worst thing to happen to the USA in my lifetime.
Zero tolerance is why every baby’s diaper’s and granny’s walkers are being searched in line at the airport.
The people in charge have abdicated any responsiblility for exercising judgment and have thrown up their hands and said “screw it. I don’t want to get in trouble so I am going straight by the book.” Part of this is because they like it. Part of it is lawsuits. Part of it is liberal minded “fairness” thinking aka insanity. Part of it is that with full employment and affirmative actio, we just have a lot more stupid people in positions of power than in the old days.
We are doomed.
