(CNN) - Members of the Westboro Baptist Church announced Thursday plans to picket Saturday's funeral for Elizabeth Edwards in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Kansas-based Church - monitored by anti-hate groups such as the Anti-Defamation league and the Southern Poverty Law Center - is known for its extremist opposition to homosexuals, Jews and other groups.
The church members also oppose the War in Iraq.
According to the church's website, members will hold a protest from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Here’s an idea: Beat the crap out of them. I bet they quit after that.
You need to have a lot of bodies to take up public space where they would be protesting, AND beat them to it. When they saw this happening in Missouri and they weren’t getting any camera time, they turned tail and ran.
Hey, Mayor Bloomberg might accuse these civil terrorist of being upset with Obamah's tax deal.
A good point. I participated in a counter againsyt the Phelpies and was disappointed by the conduct of many of my fellow supporters (the haters did not even show up). Horn honking, cheering and loud music made it seem like a party. Silence and peaceful presence is a powerful statement.
announce that they will show up.
sometimes they don't even show up if they are going to be greatly outnumbered
if they actually show up, they try to get the counter protesters to touch them
then they file suit for assault
this is how they make their money
Everyone must be forewarned not to touch them in any way.
Yep, God bless’m for sure. This situation does create a dilemma for the left though. Pro-gay but anti-military. What to do...
It is all about publicity. And, the counter demonstration is precisely what will give them even more publicity.
As obnoxious as this “church” is, the best method of dealing with them is to ignore them completely.
Religious zealots often thrive on persecution whether deserved or undeserved. Ignoring them is probably the best remedy.
I think what the Westboro Baptist Church is doing is totally WRONG and they have no place at Elizabeth Edward’s or any funeral...OK that being said let me play devil’s advocate.
The flip side is, I thought the left was all for freedom of speech..any speech, no matter what speech, do not hold back speech...........I think Westboro Baptist Church is wrong for going but you would think the left would embrace it...just saying.
The one thing that never happens with this group is they get ignored. They know how to create a crowd.
God Hates Everyone!
I think you’re stretching to make a left/right argument where there is none. I haven’t heard a single serious person on either side support Fred Phelps, but nor have I heard anyone saying “There ought to be a law.”
Everyone should know the difference between condemning speech and banning it.
Yeah they put out some kind of manifesto. Something about her secularism.
These people are not sick ....they are very crafty at setting these events up so that the family will try to sue them or prevent them from coming....the Westboro Family is all LAWYERS... and THAT is how they make their money...in the settlements on the lawsuits.
they don’t even believe in this stuff...its a racket.
I liked the story where they were protesting some funeral and had their tires slashed, and then they couldn’t find anyone in the entire town to fix their car. The free market at work.
Yep. Somehow that line, "He protesteth too much" seems to come into play here.
It`s really sad that this awful group is putting good Baptists in a poor light. They are way off base.
People should not support abortion, homosexuality and removing Christ from the public square. Whoever they are will have to account to God for this. Anybody with the Spirit of Christ within them, does not support these things in any way shape or form.
I pray that nobody dies without Christ!
