House, Senate on Collision Course After Dems Reject Tax Cut Bill
Fox ^ | December 09, 2010

The House and Senate appear to be on a collision course over President Obama's controversial tax plan, after House Democrats voted to block the package from coming to the floor in its current form.

Though the vote was not binding, the House Democratic caucus on Thursday approved a measure by Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., effectively rejecting the GOP-negotiated deal unless and until a majority of Democrats support it. One Democratic leadership aide said the vote "shows how much the White House screwed this up."

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, meanwhile, told Fox News he expects the Senate to take up the bill anyway without any substantive changes Thursday afternoon. He predicted the measure would pass, a belief echoed by a number of Senate Democratic aides interviewed by Fox News. But that would send the bill straight to the House, where some members are mounting a rebellion.

"If it's take it or leave it, we'll leave it," said Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, after the caucus vote Thursday, adding that he thinks House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will take her cue from the caucus. ...

Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., said "it's a pretty clear message. We don't like the bill."

The GOP shouldn’t like it either. It’s a RINO bill.

It should really be "House Democrats throw taxpayers under the bus."

This is not a knock against you, VRWCmember. I have a really stick up my you know what about using the term 'low income taxpayers'. Yes, while a few at the very top of that bracket pay some taxes, the vast majority pay absolutely zero. I also don't like using the terms lower, middle, and upper because it's often used to breed class warfare and class racism.

Republicans can make the current tax rate retroactive to Jan. 1, and they can make them PERMANENT. It’s a beautiful thing.

Yes, that is a beautiful thing, but what are the chances it would also pass the Senate AND be signed by Obama? One thing I can not imagine him doing is making these low rates permanent. No way. I think the two-year extension is the best we're going to get from this administration.

Maybe I don’t know the logistics on this, but I think a GOP House that gets a tax cut extension or permanence bill thru the Senate would then face an Obama “signing statement”.

It’s not unheard of for signatures to reinterpret text.

The Republicans should just walk out!

They negotiate a deal in ‘good faith’ with Zero, and the demonic-rats vote it down.

If they walk out, the demonic-rats will have to pass the Bush tax rates without a single Republican vote; or be responsible for tax increases on the poor and no extension of jobless benefits.

They would howl for being forced to admit they idiots.

I thought I read that the GOP House leadership already chose committee leaders and no new Tea Party Pubbies where selected?

That would be great.

But...to make them permanent, they not only have to pass the GOP House (a given), they also need 60 votes in the Democrat Senate (improbable, but not impossible) and avoid a veto by Obama (at this stage, I've no idea what he might do...but I'm not very hopeful).

Don't count your chickens...

You wouldn't expect any freshmen Congressman to Chair a Committee. For good reasons.

Perhaps, however a 64 member swing brings with it a sizable mandate one would think.

I have a really stick up my you know what about using the term 'low income taxpayers'.

My point is that in their determined zeal to punish the evil upper income (those with household income > $250K) the house democrats are throwing all the rest of the taxpayers (i.e. those with income <$250K) under the bus.

However, you see how much ice that is cutting the Dem caucus right now.

Problem is, we're dealing with a bunch of irrational socialists and a committed anti-American ideologue.

Is it conceivable that the coming caucus might not force a vote and elect someone else, once her voting bloc is gone?

It's unlikely. After all, the 63 DEmocrat Congressmen who will be MIA come January were mostly of the moderate/"blue dog" stripe.

On balance, the election results tended to make the Democrat caucus in the House even more radical than it was.

Recall that, when she announced her intention not to step down, Pelosi remarked that she believed her calling was "to keep the President from giving it all away".

Consequently, expect the Democrat caucus to continue to act like a bunch of malignant spoiled children for the next two years.

If the House Rats don’t vote for this before Congress adjourns, taxes will increase by the highest amount in U.S. history on ALL taxpayers, and in two years the Rats will lose another 63 seats in the House!
