ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Don Meredith, one of the most recognizable figures of the early Dallas Cowboys and an original member of ABC's "Monday Night Football" broadcast team, died Sunday. He was 72. Meredith's wife, Susan, told The Associated Press on Monday her husband died in Santa Fe after suffering a brain hemorrhage and lapsing into a coma. She and her daughter were at Meredith's side when he died.

"He was the best there was," she said, describing him as kind, warm and funny. "We lost a good one."

She said a private graveside service was being planned and that family members were traveling to Santa Fe.

Don and his wife Susan graced us with their presence for an event in Santa Fe a few years back. A gentle man, and a gentlemen.
I will remember him fondly for that home-style wit.

Looks like Gifford is next. And being married to Kathy Lee, he’s probably counting the days.

Why do men die before their wives?
Because they want to.

We east Texans are proud of native son Dandy Don. He was an outstanding athlete in both football and basketball and a great entertainer.

When driving up I-30 to Little Rock (from Dallas), I always think of Don Meredith when I pass the the Mt.Vernon exit.

He was also a two-time All-American while playing QB at Southern Methodist University as the 1950's came to a close.

RIP Don. Enjoyed listening to you. Also I agreed that Bobby Joe Idaho
had a better sound than Joe Montana. Still chuckle about that one.

Wow... I’d long forgotten he’d had a stint in acting. He had a strong presence wherever he was, that’s for sure.

Jerry Jones better have a real nice tribute for Don at their next game. The Cowboys wouldn’t be nearly worth as much as they are had it not been for Meredith, they’d be just another NFL Franchise.

Funny, ESPN rates him as 1 of the best quarterbacks of his era.

So he has to share the stage with Aikman and Staubach, thats a pretty tough crowd to compare him to, and then say he wasn't the best.

That would be like implying Kobe Bryant is a lousy basketball player pbecause he's not as good as Michael Jordan.

The game was a lot tougher for QB's when Meredith played.

The rules during Meredith's era were a lot stricter for offensive holding and a lot more liberal for defensive pass interference. And QB'a weren't protected by the officials in the '60's like they are today. Plus, the quarterbacks called their own plays back when Meredith played.

One of only 12 people (10 players) in the Dallas Cowboys' Ring Of Honor.

I'd be VERY surprised if they didn't.

Meredith was a good one. There haven't been many in this era of overproduced televised sports events.

My favorite line was, "That's telling 'em what they said in the truck, Howard."

I remember one game during which Cosell strangely and inexlicably referred to Cowboys running back Robert Newhouse as a “bad runner”. As I recall, toward the end of the game, Newhouse was involved in an option play which ended with him throwing a TD pass.

Merediths’response? “Howard, he may not be able to run, but he sure can pass!”

Happy 72nd, Don Meredith
Posted at 12:50 PM on Mon., Apr. 12, 2010

Excerpt:

I don’t know whether Don and his wife Susan watched Sunday’s implosion on the internet, but I did email them on Saturday to wish Mr. Meredith a happy 72nd birthday. Meredith, the first player the Cowboys ever signed, was born April 10, 1938 in Mount Vernon.

“We are having a lovely day,” Susan Meredith emailed back on Saturday. “Sunshine. Ducks on the lake. Dogs on the bed. And lots of friends dropping by.”

Don’s birthday isn’t his only special occasion this month. On April 28, Dallas’ Alzheimer’s Women’s Association For Resources & Education will host A Tribute to Don Meredith: An American Champion at the Fairmont.

Tribute organizers say that Meredith, who has emphysema and requires breathing treatments, probably won’t be able to travel to Dallas for the reception, auction and luncheon. But, either way, Susan Meredith is scheduled to attend, and the event will be videotaped for Don and posterity.

Wow... I’d long forgotten he’d had a stint in acting.

Meredith had a taste of acting (just as O.J. Simpson did) and NBC wooed Meredith for a tv series although many felt it was simply a way to sabotage ABC which was dominating Monday night ratings in the fall due to Monday Night Football.

They told Don what a great acting talent he was and offered him a tv show and other paid appearances if he would just switch over to NBC. Meredith supposedly went back to ABC and asked them if they'd match NBC's offer. ABC refused so Meredith went to NBC and Monday Night Football was never the same afterwards as they tried a number of replacements from Simpson to Fred "The Hammer" Williamson to Joe Namath to Alex Karras to Fran Tarkenton all the way to Dennis Miller but could never recapture the magic the chemistry they had with Meredith and Cosell.

I remember one Monday night game between the Cowboys and Giants. Both teams were playing poorly and Cosell said something like, “Gentlemen, your respective teams suck.” To which Dandy Don replied, “At least we had teams Howard.”
