Dial down the deafening Sarah Palin buzz for just a moment: The most consequential decision in the 2012 Republican presidential sweepstakes could be whether Mike Huckabee decides to run again and associates say the former Arkansas governor may well take the plunge.
If Huckabee gets in, he will unquestionably be a force to be reckoned with in the fight for the nomination. Hed be the undisputed frontrunner in lead-off Iowa, where he won by nine points in 2008. Hed be the candidate to beat in South Carolina, which he narrowly lost to John McCain two years ago in part because of a divided conservative vote. His weekly Fox show, thrice-daily radio program and Grisham-like ability to crank out a book-per-year has given him a direct media presence akin to Palins but without the sky-high negatives.
And should Huckabee stay out, it would create a vacuum on the right among both religious conservatives and tea party activists that would significantly re-order the race and potentially create a larger opening for Palin. He polls well with self-identified evangelicals, women and low-income voters all blocs that also favor Palin. And a PPP poll conducted last month found that 34 percent of Huckabee supporters said that Palin is their second choice.
Yet a potential Huckabee candidacy has been little discussed, in part because of his place well outside the Republican establishment, and in part because of a conventional wisdom that hes enjoying his current career and income too much to risk it on a run.
Huckabee, for one, is tired of being left out of the conversation and sounds increasingly like a candidate.

I welcome a strong challenge from Huck. If the two top GOP contenders for White House are conservative moral Christians, then what does that tell wanna-be’s like Guilianni, Gingrich, McCain and their ilk.
Hed be the undisputed frontrunner in lead-off Iowa, where he won by nine points in 2008. ..........................That was 2008, this is 2012. Different players are entering the scene.
Sorry Mike. You have your own TV show and you are “left out”??
Maybe the fact that people aren’t watching or caring should be a clue or a hint about a Presidential run. Don’t.
You could always try to bag a caribou, it might help.
but he’ll split the vote again
Please don’t Huck, your pardon will sink you. Shadow groups from Mitt will make commercials, don’t waste your donors’ $.
Ok, I’m on the board, selecting a new CEO for my very large corporation. This corporation has great potential, but also huge problems and it’s very complex.
In looking for a new CEO, do I focus my search on experienced CEOs and executive management types currently employed, (Govenors, Senators, Congressmen)? Or would it be wise to look at someone who has been semi retired, and only involved in the business in a commentary capacity?
I think Glen Beck said it best. Do you damn job, and do it well. If you do, people will ASK you to run for President.
Huck wants to be President to salve his bruised ego, he wants it because it will make him feel good.
Meanwhile, we have some outstanding candidates who have done their jobs VERY well - Chris Christie and Sarah Palin come to mind.
Huck - just please go away and get a hug from your Mommy.
“Maybe the fact that people arent watching or caring should be a clue or a hint about a Presidential run. Dont.”
There are a LOT of people who like huck for some reason. If it was up to freepers, Fred would have won every state but the conservative base doesn’t revolve around us all the time.
Did the article mention Huck has a “Willie Horton” problem.
I hope the party is smart enough not to allow the media to pick the ‘forces to be reckoned with’ in the GOP primaries this time.
I respect him - but not enough to want to see him run for president. He should stay on TV as a prattling-head.
Govs Christie and Palin didn’t even complete a single term so I’m not quite sure how you could compare them to someone who was re-elected and served for 10 years.
"Do it the old fashioned way. Earrrrrrn it."
If you want open borders you will love Mike in the Whitehouse.
Let’s nominate McCain again or even McConnell.
They have the longest record of continuous service!
Agree?
As it should. Huckabee ignored the will of a judge and a duly selected jury for no particularly good reason, and as a result four good police officers were later murdered in cold blood by that vicious psychopath.
We can't afford yet another guy with such poor judgment in the presidency in this day and age.
I would like to see Huckabee run again. I did not look
closely at him last time, but would be interested in
choosing between he and Palin. Palin comes with a huge ego which I don’t see in Huckabee, but Palin seems to be more
forceable. She at the same time seems like a more revengeful person. But we need a Christian who will stand up for Christian Americans. I think the thing that put me off on Huckabee in the first place is the connection of Baptist and President Carter. It makes one wonder if we want another Baptist for President... being a Baptist I never understood Carter’s thinking on Christianity.
