Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio) received high marks Sunday from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who said that so far, Boehner is "avoiding most of my mistakes."
Gingrich was swept in as Speaker after the Republican wave of 1994 put the GOP back in the majority in the House for the first time in 40 years.
On "Fox News Sunday," Gingrich said Boehner has avoided the same mistakes he made during the transition period in 1993.
"I was too aggressive in public relations," he said. "I was too willing to lead with my chin in debating with the president, which I thought was essential to fill a vacuum at the time."
Gingrich said it's not the role Boehner needs to fill as House Speaker .
"I think what Boehner should do is decide what the voters who led to a landslide, the biggest shift in House power since 1948--what is it they really want? What is it he owes them as a legitimate part of a free society? And he ought to calmly and methodically get that done," Gingrich said.
The former House Speaker, who also said he's leaning toward a run for president in 2012, said the lame duck session is proof that Democrats and President Obama still haven't accepted the message sent by voters in November.
"He just suffered a stunning defeat, and yet he's behaving as though nothing has changed," Gingrich said. "Look what Reid's trying to do in the Senate. It's the same baloney."
And Lord knows Newt made plenty of them.
Newtie ... you can say that again!
Like what there Newty, screwing around with one of your aides. Just like Klintoon. I HATE YOUR RINO GUTS Newt. YOU saddled the country with that Fat Tub of Lard Hastart and HE gave us the RINO POS Congress of 2006. Thanks alot Newty!
Some people seem made to be opposition leaders, but not made to govern. Newt of the 1990s proved he was one of those.
He was great at leading the charge, but not good at governing after victory.
Sounds like he is smarter now. But its probably too late.
Does this mean the new speaker will not be blackmailed by sex scandals into shutting down investigations into the clintons?
Does this mean Boehner won’t trade in a cancer-stricken wife for a newer model?
You have no business thinking or expounding on what Boehner should do.
Will no one rid us of this meddlesome newt?
Leni
I wish ol’ Newt would just STFU. I don’t care what he thinks.
> Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio) received high
> marks Sunday from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich
If RINO Gingrich speaks approvingly of Boehner, then I’m suspicious of Boehner.
Hey, Newt. Pelosi is waiting on the couch for you to do another episode of “Tax the Economy into Oblivion for the Junk Science of Global Warming”.
Oh, and don’t forget to surrender as soon as it looks like the odds are against you.
“Go away, Newt. Ya bother me.”
Agreed. Newt is a self serving politician in the mold of Crist/Spector. Newt stands for Newt, no more, no less.
The fact that Newt is “leaning” toward a run for president in 2012 only shows me Newt is not nearly as smart as both he and I thought he was.
Newt hasn’t changed; he is still a publicity hog. He thrives on the limelight and the Dems used that against him in the 90s. They made him the face of everything they were against and it worked. More recently they have tried to use the same tactic by blaming Bush for everything, but that has failed because Bush refused to co-operate. The Dems demonize Sarah Palin but she isn’t in charge of anything so it gains them nothing. So far Boehner has remained low key enough to deny the Dems an easy target. They try but to little effect. A candidate Gingrich would be the answer to Demonrat prayers. Newt go immerse yourself in research for another book and leave politics alone for at least two more years. Please!
Newt should not even bring up fornication.
Boehner and Gingrich worked together closely back then.
I will not criticize Boehner until he actually has power and does something worth criticizing.
Also makes me worry that Boehner and his colleagues are fighting the last war.
I guess that means he won’t be having an affair while his wife is being treated for cancer.
