'I was Drunk': Passenger Drops Anchor of Moving Cruise Ship in the Middle of the Caribbean
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | December 1, 2010

Posted on 12/01/2010 4:33:12 PM PST by Cecily

A drunk cruise ship passenger has been arrested after dropping the anchor on a moving liner. Rick Ehlert, 44, went into a restricted area, put on work gloves and released the anchor of the 1,260-passenger ship in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, said the FBI. For good measure he also threw a life buoy overboard as the liner made its way from Costa Maya on the Caribbean coast of Mexico to Tampa, Florida. The sailing enthusiast is now in custody and faces charges of attempting to damage a vessel and endangering a ship's safe navigation. If found guilty he could have to pay a $250,000 (£160,000) fine and be imprisoned for up to 20 years.

So, with him releasing the anchor, how many of those sunbathers were thrown off? The hypothesis in your theory happened, what was the result?

at 105,000 displaced tons, traveling at 20 knots, it would snap with a thunderous explosion, dent up the outer hull a bit and ensure that the continual endless evolution of painting the ship is safe.

The Navy? Yeah you’d be looking for another line of work...

This guys an ass, but with as much alcohol as there is on the typical cruise, I’m surprised there aren’t more tragedies!!

I'm surprised that with drunk guests on board, these types of machinery spaces aren't better secured. No guest should ever be able to access these types of spaces, intoxicated or not, ever. What if he'd have gotten hurt? He'd have sued the pants of the cruise ship for not babysitting his drunk ass better and he'd have likely received a nice settlement.

I can't believe that a drunk guest can just waltz in and drop the ship's anchor. It's really mind-boggling that security in these spaces was that lax.

Can you prove he had “intentional” intent of injuring or possibly killing everyone on board

Let's see, he went into a restricted area, donned work gloves and released the anchor. Hmmmm, that's a tough call. The fact that he has sailing experience tells me that he knew exactly what he was doing.

As for 'holier than thou' - are you retarded? Seriously, do you have a learning disability? If someone throws a refrigerator off a bridge into traffic, is that funny to you? How about shooting into a crowd? This idiot went to a fair amount of effort go get through the restricted access area - to do something he knew would cause harm to the ship, and possibly to 1,200 innocent victims. And you want to tell him he's a naughty boy?

Im noticing. Im trying to count the number of times Cpt Holy has insulted the people he is talking to by calling them morons and idiots or questioning whether they know physics.

Also, its kind of funny that he is asking all of these questions without giving the answers, since he is so intelligent.

You are comparing a Battleship, with armor - against a cruise ship. Do you honestly think this is a fair comparison?

Here’s a hint ... the cruiseliners are not designed to go into battle. They are not designed to take this kind of stress.

That’s why they don’t land aircaft on them, or have gun mounts on them.

The holier than thou, law and order and any cost Freepers tend to fly into a rage and foam at the mouth any time any criminal isn't summarily executed at the time they are arrested, regardless of the crime they are accused of.

If you do not agree with most freepers why don't you move back to where you fit in better, like moveon?
We already see you want to extend unemployment benefits to freeloaders. What more liberalism do you want?

The bigger issue, is how was it that a drunken passenger was ABLE to get into a restricted area and do something that put the ship at risk?

>> it would snap...

Yes, unlikely a anchor assembly would be designed to sink the ship is supposed to simply tether. No doubt there would be some significant dredging before that “thunderous” snap.

So, you cant prove that he intended to hurt or kill everyone. You can only prove that he intended to drop the anchor. The rest is supposition.

If he threw a refrigerator off of one deck into a crowd of people, your analogy would work. But, since you cant prove malice or intent, your analogy fails.

Maybe if you didnt spend so much time calling everyone a retard you would be able to think critically. I never suggested what his punishment should be. I think he should be tried and let the evidence sort it out. You have already sentenced him to death because you believe he intended to hurt and kill, not because it has been proven. I sure hope you are not a judge.

I was hoping someone would point that out.

Thanks for cutting through all the blather.

Yeah, if she made contact with bottom, I'd say its safe to assume that many ocean floor residences would need to find a new home... and new underwear!

I missed the part where this bozo was sentenced to death. Can you point it out to me, please?

I agree with you. The ship was the Ryndam of Holland America. This is a very good cruise line with a much older sailing population. Rather than throwing the book they should drop the anchor on him!

Involuntarily unemployed is an oxymoron. People are only unemployed if they want to be. If people want to be employed they get a job. Freepers understand this. Moveons want to blame someone else.

A ship is under way (cruise ships travel at ~20 knots) - and this man, with intentional intent of injuring or possibly killing every other passenger - intentionally and with knowledge drops the anchor, for nothing more than a ‘kick’? When you drop an anchor of a ship with a displacement in the neighborhood of 70,000 tons, moving at ~20 knots...<snip remainder of the rant>

I'm sure the drunk guy took all those calculations into consideration when finalizing his nefarious plot, including the chain size and wind velocity. He must be a mean drunk.

At any rate, his plan went awry, since no one was reported to be missing or hurt, and the ship was undamaged.
