'I was Drunk': Passenger Drops Anchor of Moving Cruise Ship in the Middle of the Caribbean
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | December 1, 2010

Posted on 12/01/2010 4:33:12 PM PST by Cecily

A drunk cruise ship passenger has been arrested after dropping the anchor on a moving liner. Rick Ehlert, 44, went into a restricted area, put on work gloves and released the anchor of the 1,260-passenger ship in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, said the FBI. For good measure he also threw a life buoy overboard as the liner made its way from Costa Maya on the Caribbean coast of Mexico to Tampa, Florida. The sailing enthusiast is now in custody and faces charges of attempting to damage a vessel and endangering a ship's safe navigation. If found guilty he could have to pay a $250,000 (£160,000) fine and be imprisoned for up to 20 years.

I guess he's lucky his inebriated state didn't inspire him to do a cannonball dive into the ocean.

Well, that would have been cheaper, and more of a public service...

Just saying.

“Poor dude was drunk. “
___________

Drunk on a cruise?!?!? You can’t be serious.

I took an executive, work cruise in the early 1990’s and it was non-stop drinking from morning till night- and that was with the bosses on board, in a work related environment.

This guys an ass, but with as much alcohol as there is on the typical cruise, I’m surprised there aren’t more tragedies!!

What an appalling and evil proposition. Do you also torture animals in your spare time?

The law and order and any cost Freepers are very amusing, in their applications of what they perceive as "justice".

Ever seen the inside of a ship, sonny? Ever been on one? Did you know that the middle of the ship has an Atrium, where it’s 6+ stories to the concrete floor below, and there are 3 ft tall glass fences that keep people from falling to their demise? Probably not.

Did you know that the upper decks have people laying out in the sunshine - drinking and enjoying life - and that a sudden stop will likely toss more than a couple people over-board - to fall 6-12 stories into the ocean below?

No, a tard like you probably think’s this is funny.

It’s about as funny as firing a machine gun into a crowd. A lot of people are going to get hurt - and hurt bad. More than a few could die. But, hey ... he was drunk and this is funny, right?

Do you know what 70,000 tons of ocean liner, crusing at ~20 knots does when an anchor is dropped? Did you know that ocean liners cruise at 18-22 knots? Probably not.

Didn’t think you knew .... idiot.

And it’s spelled ‘Moron’, moron.

Perhaps you think it’s funny when a drunk collides with a family on Christmas too?

Tard.

The penalty for doing stupid stuff needs to be increased.

The same holds true for Private Manning who supposedly is the person behind wikileaks. Manning should be court martialled promptly and, if convicted, shot at sunrise.

When you drop an anchor of a ship with a displacment in the neighborhood of 70,000 tons, moving at ~20 knots - what do you suppose happens?

The anchor chain snaps into, that's what they are designed to do. Regardless, there isn;t an anchor chain on the planet that will stop or even slow a 70,000 ton ship moving at 20 knots.

Do you have any idea what you are babbling about?

You have obviously never been on an ocean liner. You have never seen the ships that run in the 70,000-120,000 ton range. You have never seen the large, open spaces inside the ship where a stop can propel people over a 3ft glass wall to fall 6+ stories onto a cement floor.

You’ve no idea what you are babbling about - and you would let this man off easily? How about setting fire to a theater with 1,200 people in it? Is that funny too?

The fact is that this man, intentionally and with malice - endangered the lives of 1,200 people - and intentionally damaged a ship with several tens of millions of dollars.

The USS Brewton dropped its anchor at the pier in Djibouti..after I recommended they should not..there is lots of junk down there I told em..this was to the XO.

They stayed 3 days..the morning of departure..an attempt was made to raise the anchor..it would not budge.

Received a call on the Embassy radio..please go to the Brewton..the Captain would like to talk with me..lol.

What happened is another story.

Have you ever been on a battleship, or a cruise ship ... and seen what that chain looks like? This is not the chain you pull your Chevy out of the ditch with.

I’ll give you a hint ... each link of the chain weighs in the neighborood of 150 - 350 lbs. Depending upon the anchor’s size and location. And that’s a weight per Link. The anchor alone is in the neighborhood of 20-50 tons. After all, that anchor is designed to hold the 70-120,000 ship still, against the oceans’ current.

Yeah, it will snap just like a thread....

Can you prove he had “intentional” intent of injuring or possibly killing everyone on board. Can you send someone to jail because you think they “supposed” something?

And using your stupid holier than thou “I care about squirrels more than him” logic, this “idiot” has as much desire to cause you or your family harm as the squirrel does, unless you were on the boat. This man did absolutely nothing to you, so you really shouldnt be all that upset.

And what would happen if you dropped the anchor on your Air Craft carrier while under way.

Would lives be possibly lost? Would you damage the aircraft carrier?

But, more interestingly ... what would the Navy do to you?

The holier than thou, law and order and any cost Freepers tend to fly into a rage and foam at the mouth any time any criminal isn't summarily executed at the time they are arrested, regardless of the crime they are accused of.
