Editor's note: Ed Rollins, a senior political contributor for CNN, is senior presidential fellow at the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University. He is a principal with the Dilenschneider Group, a global public relations firm. He was White House political director for President Ronald Reagan and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
(CNN) -- The first date is over. Not much happened. President Obama and his new governing partners, the House and Senate Republicans, met at the White House along with the Democratic leaders and discussed the unsolvable issues between them.
Even though they made no decisions and both sides went their separate ways, they agreed to start negotiations on extending the tax cuts. That in itself is the beginning of a positive process. They actually talked to each other and talked of a plan for action.
As with real dating, both sides have to get along or nothing will happen. So maybe this situation has more in common with an arranged marriage.
The American voters are the substitute parents, and they want this marriage to work or at least to be civil. And we, the voters, hold the shotgun.

She does have an ability to cut to the chase, and framing the language of whatever the debate is. I've noticed it angers a lot of people, particularly those who say she's dumb.

Mr Lakeshark, I always marvel at your ability to type so well despite the copious amounts of Sarah slobber on your keyboard...
FTR, I do not believe Mrs Palin is dumb. Rather, I think she possesses a certain inate cunning (not always the same as true intelligence, but it can do in a pinch)
If that's what you mean by cunning, I guess I'll take it.
Calling my response slobber doesn't exactly help your intellectual crusade here.
As to "true intelligence", there's not any evidence that she doesn't have it in spades.....did you like the double negative?
:-)
But one thing I'd like to see made a zottable offense is posting gratuitous & unsubstantiated provocations about a particular candidate and then calling those who show up to defend them "cheerleaders" & "koolaid drinkers".
Thats getting old REAL fast.
I saw that WFB Jr. bit too. I was very impressed that RWR had given enough in depth thought to their conversation that he was able to fill ten pages with notes and observations within just a few hours. One can just not see SP doing the same.
No, I'm saying he's a has-been who happens to be saying what you want to hear.
Sorry. I thought that "Koolaid" was overused on this thread.

It cannot be said that I did not enjoy your use of the double negative. I have to call a parent and a doctor now. Further responses from this user will be delayed, or absent entirely.
Bonne journèe, Mr Lakeshark.
;) Thanks! Gotta go...
And I did point that out earlier, twas a pravacative post, no?
Was that a triple negative toe loop you added? Twas quite a beauteous thing to behold......
I give it a "10".
If you are delayed or absent, have a great one!
That’s okay, onyx. I don’t expect a reply to every comment.
You do yeoman work on this site. Thanks for that.
I lost my temper a minute ago with earljam and used inappropriate language. Oh, well.
This is the post that you seem unable to read.
The two best speeches ever given by an American woman, were both by Governor Palin, they are what catapulted her to super stardom of the conservative movement.
Palin is currently the biggest speaker in America, and probably the biggest since Reagan, unless sitting Presidents have out drawn her, she is clearly not a weak or average speaker.
Palin is unelectable not because of what she lacks but because of what she is. Says a lot about where we are as a country.
A reality show celebrity?
Pathetic...
Probably didn't vote for the guy who used to act with a chimp did you.
By the time she got done with the 4 years (if she did), her political reputation would have been in tatters. She cut her losses in Alaska. It's a valid play in poker or politics.
Bedtime for Bonzo was in the 1950s.
Reagan didn’t do that movie in 1978 as part of the 1980 presidential campaign, like Sarah Palin is doing with Kate Gosselin and Dancing With The Stars.
he can mysteriously resurrect the candidacy of his one true love, Duncan Hunter.
Uh, I don't think Hunter is going to run. I said that 4, 5, 6 months ago. If he does, great. But highly unlikely. But unlike the sniveling worshipers here that constantly tell us "only Sarah" can win, or is worthy of support, I SUPPORT ALL CONSERVATIVES. That is why I like Pence, DeMint, Bolton, Rounds and several others who have been contemplating, to varying degrees, running for POTUS.
It's really shameful what he does here, taking one of the bright stars of the conservative base and tearing her down in order to sow confusion. No, it's not just shameful, it's downright disgusting.
On the contrary, I'm shining the light on her record; a record her cultists breezily overlook and pretend is chock full of nothing but conservative wisdom. The confusion is sown when idiots like you lie to make her more palatable to conservatives.
His talking points:
1. ALL Palin supporters are worshippers.
Nonsense. I've said a dozen times that not all Palin supporters are worshipers or cultists. Plenty of folks here, even some that hate my guts, are truthful enough to say that they support her because they think she's better than the usual suspects Mitt/Huck/TPaw, etc. Or that they like the fact she is constantly taking on Obama. Both are legitimate views.
The worshipers, OTOH, like to deny reality about her sparse record. And spend 90% of their time on Palin threads and/or searching out those who dissent for scorn and get emotionally bent out of shape about criticisms of Precious. Ring any bells there, sharky?
2. She's secretly an amnesty supporter because she supported John McCain (he has the secret decoder ring whenever she does strange things, like supporting the AZ law, calling for border security at all costs, etc.).
A flippin lie told over and over don't make it true, sharky. I NEVER said her support for McCain, in of itself, demonstrated anything. What you fail to grasp, is that even after 'repaying' McCain by campaigning for him, as she said she would, she went on to say in a 2010 interview that she "agreed with him on immigration". Sharky, do you know that John McCain, for all his BS protestations to the contrary, is still in full support of amnesty? If you don't, you are dumber than I thought. Did you also know, that months later, Palin once again, laid out her amnesty plan to Bill O'Reilly on national TV.
So this lying through your teeth about Palin's immigration stance is the real fantasy here. Sure, she has come out in favor of SB1070 and for border security. As has McCain, Grahmnesty, and just about every other amnesty queen. Securing the border has NOTHING to do with amnesty. Amnsety is allowing those already here to STAY. That is what Palin wants, as she has repeated multiple times. SB1070 also has NOTHING to do with amnesty. SB1070 was also supported by McCain, Perry, and a whole host of amnesty queens. The State of AZ does NOT deport illegals. It just turns them over to ICE or the BP. It is only federal policy that can grant or disallow amnesty, and Precious is on the exact same page with McCain and the democrats.
3. She once wrote a letter supporting the LOST treaty so Alaska wouldn't have it's rightful natural resources taken by other countries.
It is her abject ignorance of what was in LOST, including UN taxation of Americans and loss of sovereignty to a supra national body that she brushes away because it was theoretically in Alaska's interest. What utter tripe. This thing is a grotesque boondoggle, that NO ONE HERE defended prior to finding out that Precious begged the Senate to pass it.
4. She's a woman, and we can't have any woman other than Margaret Thatcher (who he wouldn't have supported when she was running, because she was a woman.).
I also said I could easily vote for Michele Bachmann, a proven conservative, and as close to Thatcher as we've got.
6. She's dumb, screechy, and has a reality show that is, well...... dumb and screechy.
What happened to #5? I've never seen her reality show. Reality shows aren't my cup of tea. More power to her. Hope she makes bundles of cash. The fact that she has to be in front of the cameras constantly, however, makes Chuckie Schumer seem modest. Her voice irritates me. So what? I don't base my votes on voices. But it is her sentence structure, or lack thereof, that is more grating. Still, not a reason to dismiss her, and I don't for that reason.
7. Then he goes on to insult anyone who dares come against his talking points, never actually debating or discussing anything they say.
That's a fancy way of saying I've handed you your arse each time you try to debate me. You start whining and change the subject to my imaginary crusade for Duncan Hunter - who I don't think will even run.
ANd the notion that I'm the only one dishing out "insults" is so easily disproven, it's not worth addressing.
But you left out some other key "talking points". Namely, her full throated support for the insidious Title XI feminist claptrap. Her support for McCain's $300B homeowner 'rescue' plan. Her support for cap and trade. Her belief that global warming is "real". Her unwavering support for the $700B Tarp. Her support for FIoRINO over conservative stalwart Chuck DeVore. Her support for RINO Ayotte over her conservative rival LeMontagne. Her blaming the mortgage crisis on "predatory lenders". Her "federalist" views on abortion. Her "windfall profits" grab from the oil companies. Her abject lack of knowledge of foreign policy.
‘Thats getting old REAL fast.’
I was tired of it four years ago.
