Editor's note: Ed Rollins, a senior political contributor for CNN, is senior presidential fellow at the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University. He is a principal with the Dilenschneider Group, a global public relations firm. He was White House political director for President Ronald Reagan and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
(CNN) -- The first date is over. Not much happened. President Obama and his new governing partners, the House and Senate Republicans, met at the White House along with the Democratic leaders and discussed the unsolvable issues between them.
Even though they made no decisions and both sides went their separate ways, they agreed to start negotiations on extending the tax cuts. That in itself is the beginning of a positive process. They actually talked to each other and talked of a plan for action.
As with real dating, both sides have to get along or nothing will happen. So maybe this situation has more in common with an arranged marriage.
The American voters are the substitute parents, and they want this marriage to work or at least to be civil. And we, the voters, hold the shotgun.

That’s the most asinine thing I’ve read in a while. Someone wants to be Drama Queen for a day! It is entertaining how many of these OLD white guys are intimidated by a li’l ole girl, though. Especially one who hasn’t even said she’s running for anything. Especially one they’re always denigrating and calling insignificant.

This constant criticism of Sarah does nothing to change anyone's mind. Her detractors would be best advised to promote their own candidates.
this is sure getting old. and I don’t know why the powers that be here on FR don’t put a stop to this individual troll.
Ed, you’re no pile of RINO dung...oh, wait.
Hey hey..cut Ed Rollins some slack..I mean, he ran Reagan’s 1984 re-election run..it took a savvy guy to beat Mondale in 49 states..fortunately..Ed had a lot of “walk-around” money that November day in 1984...
Palin, ...you’re no Reagan.
Right. God creates us all as individuals, and that includes clones and identical twins.
Palin will be known as Palin, no matter the course she chooses or WE CHOOSE, when we vote.
Thank God He sees us as we will be and not as we are now.
Are they crying out for relevance? Are they afraid events are passing them by?
MSNBC, Scarborough, and Nicole Wallce, and the rest of the silliness takes my liklihood of voting for Palin in the primary from 50-60% up to 90-95%. It's called spite and it is a powerful motivator.
Did Ed Rollins accomplish anything other than hitching his wagon to the Reagan Star?
Did Ed Rollins ever run for election? Devise a policy platform? Was he ever a CEO or Governor?
Just wondering - because Ed gives a lot of unsolicited, snarky advice on a subject where he seems to have been more of an observer than a participant or the guy in the arena.
Only in your cult of one, pissant. Only a misogynst slimeball like you would fall for the rantings of a Huck pimp like Rollins, just because it suits your own agenda.
The rest of us look at the source first before taking it seriously.
Oh, and I'm not convinced Palin should run. But as another poster noted, the more weasels like you and Rollins attack her, the more I like her. It must really get your undies in a twist that she commands the attention of millions while your lame-O Falcon party could hold your convention in a Porta-John.
Okay Ed, she may not be Ronald Reagan but she is far prettier and a modern day Davy Crockett or Daniel Boone.
I have been hearing that a lot lately.... "I'm supporting her just to make liberals' heads explode!!!!!" We can't win with that kind of shallowness.
I support Palin, but I think the criticisms are fair.
She is Reaganesque in many ways, but conservatives need to get that Ronald Reagan spent DECADES speaking, writing, philosophizing, electioneering and building from the ground up and from the top down.
What makes Sarah Palin so formidable is she is doing the same thing, but with the culture and technology we have now.
The establishment Republicans are afraid of her as they were of Reagan.
I would say Palin’s only real weakness is foreign policy and wish she would spend a little more time educating herself there and a little less time on reality TV.
I agree with him. She isn’t a serious person and not someone who has succeeded in life. Someone who has to go through five different colleges to earn a degree and who quits half way through her first term as Governor isn’t presidential material. The PalinMessiah crowd doesn’t like to face the facts. But its the truth. Killing the messenger doesn’t change it.
We can win by promoting Goldwater-Reagan polices of smaller govt and peace through strength. thats how we can win..
and Palin can win by being Sarah Palin. because she stands for conservative values.
“Retire the Lloyd Bentson debate riposte.
Its really, really getting old”
Also, stop suffixing “gate” to every scandal. Lord, how awfully boring are what pass for intellectuals these days.
Rollins = long time insider = zero credibility.

Reagan had a lot of accomplishments before he ran for Governor and he served TWO FULL terms. You’re embarrassing yourself, please. Palin isn’t in Reagan’s league. Not by a long shot.
I agree. And I would be willing to take a hard look at her in the year 2030, assuming she has that kind of staying power.
