Editor's note: Ed Rollins, a senior political contributor for CNN, is senior presidential fellow at the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University. He is a principal with the Dilenschneider Group, a global public relations firm. He was White House political director for President Ronald Reagan and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
(CNN) -- The first date is over. Not much happened. President Obama and his new governing partners, the House and Senate Republicans, met at the White House along with the Democratic leaders and discussed the unsolvable issues between them.
Even though they made no decisions and both sides went their separate ways, they agreed to start negotiations on extending the tax cuts. That in itself is the beginning of a positive process. They actually talked to each other and talked of a plan for action.
As with real dating, both sides have to get along or nothing will happen. So maybe this situation has more in common with an arranged marriage.
The American voters are the substitute parents, and they want this marriage to work or at least to be civil. And we, the voters, hold the shotgun.

Yep. Far more executive experience than Gore, Kerry, ‘Hill’, Obama, BobDole or McCain, for starters.
No, I didn't add it but it's definitely a keeper. I couldn't find the pic of the kiss.
I think there are more similarities and parallels than differences in the RR/SP comparison. Beloved Ronnie used whatever vehicle he could to reach the masses, working around the establishment (media and party); Sarah is using the modern equivalents to get her message out. If it is reality TV and Facebook, so be it - it is what's available to her.
There are many layers to her Alaska program, a lot more depth there than first meets the eye. Not too many have picked up on the economics lessons she gave while discussing the fishing operations. Sarah has been there and done that. This is no lightweight and I think she is setting a baseline with this program.
Well, there you go.
If you’re going to repeat the leftist lies I have to defend her. It saddens me to have to do this, but I don’t know if you’re just ignorant or if you’re a political adversary squawking for another candidate.
Paid Obama operatives and left wing bloggers were harassing her with dozens of phony ethics lawsuits, sometimes filling them using fictional Soap Opera character names, using Alinsky tactics that were bankrupting her family and stifling her administration. She had personal legal bills over $500,000 with no end in sight. These bogus lawsuits were also costing the state of Alaska, and the governors work was not getting accomplished.
She was literally spending ALL her time defending these frivolous suits, and they had effectively hamstrung her administration. These radical tactics were working because Alaska has a unique ethics law that does not protect elected officials from personal legal bills...so the game was on.
Having been through three legislative sessions and having implemented most of her agenda (which was very successful) and knowing she had a responsible Lt. Governor who shared her vision of Alaska, she thwarted their efforts by taking herself out of the equation. She recognized she had become a lighting rod to her political opponents and nothing more could be accomplished in her lame duck year if she were at the helm.
That single selfless act stopped all the nonsense and Alaska has done well under the new governor, as he has been able to continue Sarah Palin’s agenda without the distractions of bogus lawsuits.
Some of her opponents say she did this for purely selfish reasons, but that begs credulity. By resigning she risked that she could have ruined any potential future political ambitions. (Her political enemies certainly push this narrative) There were no guarantees her book would sell as it did. As vilified as she had been it is entirely possible she could have fallen flat with her endeavors since then...resigning was a real risk, but she saw it as the right and principled thing to do for her state.
Sarah Palin needs to be the best Sarah Palin. Tim Pawlenty needs to be the best Tim Pawlenty. Mitt Romney needs to quit being a chameleon and retire. etc
Now wait a minute, Duncan Hunter is an extremely able conservative and would do this country proud. He has no PR, but a lot of heart. Viable presidential candidate? Yeah, well......he should keep trying, it raise the bar.
He said that in 2008. What does he say now (in an interview with FNC's Megyn Kelly)?
But she's too polarizing to be elected the President of the United States of America, and by the way, I'll hear about that on my Facebook page."""She has a shot? No. She is too polarizing. Can she raise money for the party? Can she get behind people and help them? Yes.
I said on the RIGHT, not on the ‘Republican side’ for a reason.
Not when his philosophical premise is totally wrong.
And that’s just recent candidates from the Dem side; the list is far longer than just those few you named !
Dead on. I had the mispleasure of dealing with a number of them. Frankly, I can't say "I told you so" enough.
Simply put, you’re FOS. It’s lamestream smear parrots like you that perpetuate their lies about her resignation and you make it worse because you’re a lawyer who knows better, but because you don’t like her, you’re happy to play the part of a lamestream parrot. Shame on you.
amen..
Ronald Reagan. God rest his soul. but he is not here. we are in the here and now.
Go Sarah, you got the light in their eyes and they are squirming.
I remember Rollins, Kemp, and Bennett rolling into CA to proclaim it’s citizens racists for passing prop 187.
Bastards all.
Oh, please...this one takes the cake.
Isn't that the truth...
They are afraid of passing the torch to a new generatiion of conservatives. Especially a new generation of conservatives that actully believe in the constitution of the United States.
with a handle like truthkeeper I would think you’d have a little more appreciation for the truth.
If you know the truth you know Palins resignation was a selfless act of courage.
If you believe the leftists lies, then you probably don’t...but you should really think about a name change.
I'll tell you what. I'll stipulate that everything you assert is 100% accurate. Done.
What you don't seem to understand is that in American politics, perception is reality. Sarah Palin's perception amongst the general electorate - deserved or wholly undeserved - is that she's not ready, that she's a quitter and she's not earnest.
You've just taken 6-7 paragraphs to try to explain to people posting on a conservative political forum, why she quit. How does that translate into a :15 campaign spot targeted to people who aren't posting on conservative political chat boards? It doesn't. But, "Sarah Palin quit the only state-wide job she ever had" sure does. And THAT's the ad that's going to run, ad nauseum.
You seem to be under the gross misconception that politics is about fairness. It isn't. In America, it's a full-contact blood sport, and Palin has demonstrated absolutely no ability to handle hostile media, unrelenting opposition attacks, nor any ability to deflect the pop-culture assault against her.
Everything you say or think about it her could be true. Unfortunately, that's not her political reality, and that's all that matters.
