Cancun climate summit: UN calls for worldwide phase out of incandescent bulbs
Traditional light bulbs should be banned across the world as part of plans to help tackle climate change, according to a new United Nations report.
By Louise Gray, Environment Correspondent in Cancun 5:00PM GMT 01 Dec 2010
Britain is already phasing out traditional bulbs as part of European regulations to save energy, with high wattage bulbs no longer on the shelves.
The scheme has been unpopular with many because compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) take longer to warm up and can give some people headaches.
However they last ten times longer and require far less electricity to produce the same amount of light.
A UN study found that if every nation switched from incandescent lamps to energy-efficient alternatives, it would cut the worlds electricity demand for lighting by over 2 per cent. This is equivalent to saving around 800 million tonnes of emissions.
The study was launched at UN talks in Cancun to prove how easy it would be to cut emissions if the world works together to tackle climate change.

Its not about climate change; its about telling us what to do and running our lives!
That’s what its all about.
The escapees are back running the asylum.
I call for a worldwide phase out of the UN.
GE will be so pleased. Their NBC green week initiatives are finally starting to pay off, apparently.
Horse hockey. They last maybe two or three times longer if you are lucky. But not always. They put out less light, they cost way more and I have not noticed any decrease in my electricity bill.
Heat balls of the world untie!
What a coincidence.
I was just calling for the phasing out of the UN.
They MIGHT last longer if they are left on,
the voltage is constant,
and the temperature is constant.
Put them in a location where you turn the lights on and off a lot, and they’ll burn out in half the time the incandescents last.
Yes, these idiots prefer the “green” bulbs with mercury in them! Genius! Pure genius.
Thomas Edison Bulbs only in this house. Been stocking up for a long time. I have enough to outlast the Obamalamadingdong administration and then some.
“Let there be light!” and let it be incandescent.
Let’s phase out all UN creatures. Hanging would be OK. Huge energy savings to be had.
How about the UN practice what it preaches.
At last year's UN conference on Global Warming held in Bali, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, instead of flying directly home to Korea, flew back to New York (to see a play) and thence onto Korea.
Cancun — yeah, they will be paying attention to the sessions, I am sure.
I gotta get on some board pretending to do real work on “global warming...”
The lightbulb is the symbol of modernity. Kill it.
idiots.
I have CFBs throughout the house, and they save us a ton of money. In part, that’s because our electric rates are high; in part because Vermont subsidizes these things at the moment, and they only cost a dollar apiece.
But that is my CHOICE. I think the government has no business mandating and subsidizing and distorting markets.
The UN has the scientific intelligence of a lunatic six year old. (If that.) And they think they can tell the free citizens of sovereign nations what to do?
Bush had a window of opportunity to ditch the UN when its popularity was low among Americans because of the oil for food scandal. But he blew it. Or, rather, I’m afraid he belonged to the ranks of the New World Order elite on that one—as well as on illegal immigration. He did at least keep us out of the International Court.
2 percent? And at what cost?
If these control freaks would just wait a few years until LED technology sufficiently matures, it would displace both incadescent and CFL lights without any of the distruption, blustering, and regulation.
In fact, by the time they get this nonsense implemented, it will likely be moot, much like the UN itself.

That’s just sewper!
Meanwhile, I’m calling for a worldwide phase out of the UN.
Will they have ways of identifying TYPES of electrical usage?

I’m with them. I think candles give off a more flattering light anyway.
