Was Christopher Columbus Polish?

A Portuguese historian believes he has solved the age-old mystery surrounding the nationality of Christopher Columbus.

According to Manuel Rosa, a lecturer at Duke University, North Carolina, the explorer was in fact the son of Polish King Władysław III.

It has always been thought that King Władysław III fell in battle against the forces of the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Varna in 1444. According to Mr Rosa, however, the king managed to survive the battle unscathed and fled to the Portuguese island of Madeira where he lived out the rest of his life as a hermit and married a Portuguese noblewoman.

It was there that the exiled king bore a son – or so Mr Rosa's theory goes – who would later be credited with the discovery of America. In Mr Rosa's opinion, a conspiracy was in place to protect the identity of Columbus' royal father.

“The courts of Europe knew who he was and kept his secret for their own reasons,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

Mr Rosa says that he has uncovered a plethora of evidence lending support to his theory. First, the explorer's last will, which read “being I born in Genoa,” was apparently forged after Columbus' death. Secondly, the explorer's coat of arms is similar to that of the Polish king. And thirdly, he had "reddish-haired, fair skinned and blue eyed – all features commonly found in Poland.”

The historian is hoping to clear up the mystery by collecting DNA samples from Poland's dead kings and comparing them with the DNA of Columbus' son who lies in rest in Seville Cathedral.

“I have made a request to the Cathedral in Kraków to examine remains from the tomb of Władysław II, who could turn out to be the grandfather of Columbus. It would prove the truth of my theory,” said Mr Rosa.

It is a commonly held belief among historians that Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, to Genoese parents. Some have said, however, that he was actually born in Spain.

????????????????????????????????

You GOT to be kidding.

Regardless, Columbus is truly a mystery man. If he’s not Italian, my guess is he was a Sephardic Jew and assumed his Italian identity as he knew Isabella was an anti-Semite.

The Poles HAVE a day - Kosciusko Day. The Germans have a day - Von Steuben Day.

The failure to continue celebrating those days and Columbus Day is reflective of our loss of historic identity as a nation.

There are Red-Headed Poles. Red heads are found in most or all European countries with the largest percentage probably from Scandinavia. That’s where the Irish got it from.

I think the idea that Columbus was Polish makes as much sense as the idea that pre-Columbian Indians in the Andes had domesticated Pumas to hunt mice.

Let me be another Pole to reiterate that Poles are not known for being red-headed. Slavs are blond, or dirty blond. I tend to think of grey eyes as the ultimate Slavic signifier, myself.

Red-headism is more Nordic, isn't it. Irish, Scottish, English and Nords are red. "Eric the Red".

Do you look at this picture and think: "Polish"?

Here is the Wikipedia entry on Red Hair:

Today, red hair is most commonly found at the northern and western fringes of Europe; it is associated particularly with the people located in the United Kingdom and in Ireland (although Victorian era ethnographers claimed that the Udmurt people of the Volga were "the most red-headed men in the world").[7] Redheads are common among Germanic and Celtic peoples.

Redheads constitute approximately 4% of the European population.[8] Scotland has the highest proportion of redheads; 13% of the population has red hair and approximately 40% carries the recessive redhead gene.[9] Ireland has the second highest percentage; as many as 10% of the Irish population has red, auburn, or strawberry blond hair.[10] It is thought that up to 46 percent of the Irish population carries the recessive redhead gene. Red hair reaches frequencies of up to 10 percent in Wales.[11]

Red-hair is found commonly amongst Ashkenazi Jewish populations, possibly due to the influx of European DNA over a period of centuries, or in the original founding of their communities in Europe,[12] although both Esau[13] and David[14] are described in the Bible as red-haired. In European culture, prior to the 20th century, red-hair was often seen as a stereotypically Jewish trait: during the Spanish Inquisition, all those with red-hair were identified as Jewish.[15] In Italy, red hair was associated with Italian Jews, and Judas was traditionally depicted as red-haired in Italian and Spanish art.[16] Writers from Shakespeare to Dickens would identify Jewish characters by giving them red-hair.[17] The stereotype that red-hair is Jewish remains in parts of Eastern Europe and Russia.[18]

In the United States, it is estimated that 2-6% of the population has red hair. This would give the U.S. the largest population of redheads in the world, at 6 to 18 million, compared to approximately 650,000 in Scotland and 420,000 in Ireland.[citation needed] (Note: Poles are the Western Slavs, the one main Slavic group not mentioned as having red hair- JB

Because of migration from Europe from the 16th to the 21st centuries, red-haired humans are also found all around the world, such as in North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Siberia, etc.

The Berber populations of Morocco[19] and northern Algeria have occasional redheads. Red hair frequency is especially significant among the Kabyles from Algeria, where it reaches 4 percent.[20][21] Emigration and invasion from North Africa to Southern Europe (especially Spain and Portugal) added to the number of natural red-haired humans in that region.[citation needed] The Queen of Morocco, Lalla Salma wife of king Mohammed VI, has red hair. Abd ar-Rahman I also had red hair, his mother being a Christian Berber slave.

In Asia, darker or mixed tinges of red hair can be found sporadically from Northern India, the northern Middle East (such as Iran, Lebanon and the countries of the Levant), and in rare instances on the Island of Hirado, Japan[22] and the South Pacific. Red hair can be found amongst those of Iranian descent, such as the Persians, Lurs, Nuristanis and Pashtuns. Emigration from the these people as well as parts of the Middle East, Central Asia, North India, and North Africa added to the population of red-haired humans in the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and other parts of Africa and Europe.

In Argentina, Brazil and Chile, people with red hair also make up a small portion of the population.[23]

In Australia, small isolated populations of Indigenous Australians (mainly in Western Australia and Australia's Northern Territory) have been found with red hair.[citation needed]

I've never thought about this but I think the "Jewish" theory makes more sense, but of course I haven't read the historical analysis called out in the article. And it's also quite common in Europe that the Kings are not that closely related to the people they rule, as Kings marry off their children to the princesses from adjacent nations, not the boy or girl next door.

Wonder if the media of the time call those questioning the authenticity "birthers" too.

No, I don’t ‘got’ to be kidding. I’m talking first hand family experience here. Not one redhead in the bunch or left back in Poland. Do you know the Polish population in and around Pittsburgh? Lots. No redheads that I’ve ever seen. Blondes yes.

I knew a girl in School who was Polish and had red hair
(real knockout).

There are red-headed Italians and Russians and even some Pharoahs in Egypt appear to have had red hair.

Its most common in northern and northeastern Europe, but other populations also have the gene. If its by conquest or immigration, I have no idea. But its there.

Wow! I'm shocked. :-)

Anyway, Christopher Columbus has already got his counterpart in the Polish language from the very beginning.
His name in Polish is Krzysztof Kolumb [read: kshi`shtof kolumb]

By the way, we've got the entire ‘Generation of Columbuses 1920’ in Poland. The date stands for the year they were born, metaphorically speaking naturally. It was the year of the victorious Battle of Warsaw against the Russian Bolsheviks, Aug.1920. when Poland defended her freedom and Independence. They were the first generation born in Independent Poland.

When they grew up, the vast majority of them lost their lives in the Warsaw Uprising 1944 and then from the hands of communists under the Soviet occupation. They were called “The Generation of Columbuses ‘20”. (”Kolumbowie Rocznik 20”) just for their untold heroism and ultimate sacrifice in their struggle, called in advance as pointless, against endless hostile powers. Like sailors of Columbus, who dared to sail into the endless unknown space being fully aware of the fact they would never return home, those young boys and girls jumped to the throat of the armed to teeth Hitlerite beast, often with their naked fists only. They preferred to die like free men than live in chains under Nazi or Communist yoke.

By the way, you must see this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H5dUsMjt5M

This is a real almost photographic reenactment of Warsaw of 1944, after the Uprising, made by a computer after the analysis of thousands of photographs. I saw the reaction of the veterans of the Home Army; they were teary-eyed seeing this...
