Narcissistic personality disorder, characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance and the need for constant attention, has been eliminated from the upcoming manual of mental disorders, which psychiatrists use to diagnose mental illness.
As Charles Zanor reports in todays Science Times, the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders due out in 2013 and known as D.S.M.-5 has eliminated five of the 10 personality disorders that are listed in the current edition. The best known of these is narcissistic personality disorder.
It is a puzzle why the manuals committee on personality disorders has decided to throw N.P.D. off the bus.

Ha! Rush just opened his show with this story!
LOL Next, they will eliminate:
Hillary(stab-me-in-the-back)-derangement-syndrome, Rahm (dead fish)-Clintonista-paranoia, Christian-gun-clinging-redneck phobia, and visceral-Constitutional aversion malady.
What about hoarders (a year’s fuel/food/entertainment/ammo(well 10 yr)/etc. supply)?
Once something becomes common among leftists, it no longer qualifies as a mental illness.
You will notice that depression still qualifies as a mental illness.
The reason: leftists are quite happy with the misery they bring into the world
As a result, depression is not common among leftists.
All Obama jesting aside. Do we need any further proof that psychiatrists are quacks?
If crazy people don’t know they are crazy, how could we expect them to tell if other people are crazy?
People with personality disorders are not insane. Obama meets 8 of the 9 criteria for NPD. I looked at the DSM-IV for Antisocial Persoanlity Disorder (AKA Sociopath) and Obama meets more than the 3 criteria to be considered one.
A lot of them are crazy themselves.
>snip<
One of the sharpest critics of the DSM committee on personality disorders is a Harvard psychiatrist, Dr. John Gunderson, an old lion in the field of personality disorders and the person who led the personality disorders committee for the current manual.
Asked what he thought about the elimination of narcissistic personality disorder, he said it showed how unenlightened the personality disorders committee is.
They have little appreciation for the damage they could be doing. He said the diagnosis is important in terms of organizing and planning treatment.
Its draconian, he said of the decision, and the first of its kind, I think, that half of a group of disorders are eliminated by committee.
Later in the article it quotes Jonathan Shedler as saying "The committee was stacked with a lot of academic researchers who really dont do a lot of clinical work." That seems apparent. Also, a careful reading of the article doesn't reveal what the other 4 personality disorders are that the DSM V eliminates.
Do the “committe” members have names? Shame and embarassment do have a purpose.
I guess the faceless “committee” doesn’t believe in the science like the OweBama regime demands.?
This will interest the good Dr. O
This really is bizarre.
It reminds me of the strange coincidence that everywhere he went, Bill Clinton was surrounded by dead bodies.
Just a coincidence, of course.
If NPD is not a mental disorder, then why is Obama still on meds?
This was done by a committee.
Interesting to see who the members were.
It appears that the last time a category was
discarded was 23 years ago.
This is not a coincidence.
Barry is textbook, which is obviously why they declassified it- to protect him.
“Many experts in the field are not happy about it
One of the sharpest critics of the D.S.M. committee on personality disorders is a Harvard psychiatrist, Dr. John Gunderson, ..”
Dr Gunderson is an expert in the field of personality disorders
and he is outraged.
He said the committee was unenlightened about
personality disorders.
They have little appreciation for the damage they could be doing.
“ He said the diagnosis is important in terms of organizing and planning treatment.”
Pressure from the WH, but it’s not about the President.
I suspect that you will see many ICD-9 codes disappearing as Obamacare takes effect.
If it’s not a disorder, they don’t have to pay for the treatment of it.
