When the BP oil well blew out earlier this year, the 4 million barrels that flowed into the sea didn't simply vanish. There's growing evidence that a good portion of it sunk to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, where some of it remains.
To get to the sea floor a few miles from the blown-out Macondo well, we clamber into a titanium-hulled submarine named Alvin and are gently hoisted off the deck of its mother ship, the Atlantis, into a surprisingly blue and inviting Gulf of Mexico. Mike Skowronski is our pilot.
As we descend, the water turns from bright blue to cobalt, twilight to black. Samantha Joye, a researcher from the University of Georgia, and I press our faces to our tiny windows and watch as glowing animal life streams by.
It's very peaceful.
"That's why I like diving in the submarine," Joye says. "It takes you to another place. It's calm and quiet, and then you hit the bottom and you're like, wow!"
Joye is trying to see what happened to all the oil that spewed from the BP well. As we reach the bottom, my first impression is, well, it's not here. Everything looks pretty normal.
There are tons of fish on the bottom. "I don't see any invertebrates in the sediments," Joye says. "But it's hard to say sometimes they hide. But there's definitely shrimp and critter crawling around on the sediments."
Some of the clams look happy as clams. But when the Alvin scrapes the bottom, we discover we're not actually sitting on the usual dark gray mud that forms the seafloor.
"There's oil on the bottom," Joye says. "If you look at the camera, you can see the brown coloration."

That's not the story the 0bama regime has been touting! Now even NPR is contradicting him?
To assert that some (or much) of it remains on the ocean floor, doesn't seem all that unbelievable - again, to me a non-scientist.
That’s where the organisms that have been living off of huge natural gulf oil seeps for millions of years live. They are chowing down.
Couldn’t be oil from any of the thousands upon thousands of NATURAL oil leaks on the bottom of the gulf....naw, couldn’t be.....
Sheese. These liberals...
Of the oil that was not recovered in the cleanup, most of it simply evaporated. A “good portion” of the residual bitumen was eaten by bacteria. Obama can take credit for none of that (he actually hampered the cleanup, by refusing to accept help from foreigners).
Shouldn’t we be giving BP their 20 Bil back and recall our drilling rigs?
Pray for America
What would happen if you dropped one drop of black ink into a pool that was the size of a thousand Olympic-sized swimming pools?
Would it vanish?
Because that drop of ink in that amount of water would be more than a hundred times larger in comparison to the amount of oil spilled in the Gulf.
Oil floats, so what is this stuff?
Just perused The Oil Drum.....some of the articles are saying the coral and crabs, clams, etc. are all looking OK. Seems that, since oil floats (of course this report is by NPR), no one has found oil on the ocean floor....who knows????
the chemical corexit or whatever the name is caused it to sink to the gulf floor....
NPR must think their listeners are incredibly stupid.
Oh.. wait..
All they have to do is take their samples and compare them to the stuff that blew out of the well. They can easily match it, or not. That would prove if it is indeed from the well that blew out.
There seems to be another interesting article here:

Not all oil floats. Crude oil is made up of light and heavy fractions and some of it, the stuff that is < 10 API gravity, will sink.
It’s BS, when they used to clean tanks, the sludge lieing on the bottom of the tank after the oil was pumped out, we called BS, some of it was applied to the lease roads which were the oil cos. responsibility. After 5-6 months weeds could be seen growing up on it, and the process would soon have to be repeated. I’ve seen it 50-60 yrs. ago, no submarine required.
BTTT
Guilty? (With a little makeup?)
Just got back from a family trip in South La. Brand new paved roads, myriads of billboard touting oil spill claims, and locals getting checks for 100’s of thousands of dollars. My My, My isn’t the Obama administration and the extortion of BP a wonderful thing!
It “sunk”?
She looks like a very nice lady.
But the monkey on her shoulder looks dead.
