Feds Seize Websites Suspected of Online Piracy

The U.S. government is shutting down websites suspected of copyright infringement or selling counterfeit goods as Congress debates a bill that would give feds more authority to do so.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an agency within the Homeland Security Department, has seized more than 70 websites in recent days, according to the Wall Street Journal, and posted a notice saying that the domain name has been seized by ICE through court-ordered warrants. The notice also states penalties for willful copyright infringement and trafficking in counterfeit goods.

Neither ICE nor Homeland Security responded to messages seeking comment. An ICE spokeswoman confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that the agency executed court-ordered seizure warrants against a number of domain names but declined additional comment.

I feel so much safer every time the Homeland “Security” boys seize one of these websites. Now if NASA would just do their job and boost the muzzies’ “self esteem”, maybe they’d stop running around trying to blow crap up!

Why is Homeland Security involved in protecting Hollywood’s copyright interests? Don’t they have a border to secure or something?

Wow. I feel real safe knowing that pirated materials are being yanked off the Internet. Meanwhile, illegals and terrorists enter this country through our porous Southern border to kill more Americans. Good to see where this government’s priorities lie.

Does anyone know if this is just movies, or movies+games and software?

It would be interesting if it’s just movies, considering how hollyweird is tight with the Left.

ICE agents raided facilities operated by a hip hop file-sharing site called RapGodFathers. Other seized sites that share music or sell goods include torrent-finder.com, timberlandlike.com, dvdsetsonline.com and handbagspop.com.

From the names of the sites, it sounds as if the products are varied.

DHS is involved because they moved Customs Office of Investigations out of Treasury, put them in DHS, combined them with a portion of INS and then renamed them ICE.

Yes siree, ICE sure has its priorities straight. What could possibly be more important than this, to ensure our safety.

Would ICE accept any help from individual states, like, say Arizona, in helping to enforce this critical area of national security?

Did they seize the actual websites ? I think they just seized the domain names used in the DNS servers. That is just a “translator” to the actual IP address. So as long as the IP address isn’t changed, you could still go to the sites by typing in the IP address. Or you could add the IP address with the domain name to your HOST file and you would never know the difference. If the server ( thus the IP address ) is in a foreign country, they can't do anything. They may be able to block access to that IP address to users in the US ( shades of Communist China ), but if you go through a foreign proxy, you can bypass it.

The DNS side of it is important because shady sites need to change locations often in order to keep ahead of people going after them. By taking the domain names, the Feds make it harder for people to find the servers’ current IP addresses on a continuing basis.

ICE and HSD are now rogue agencies. Copyrights are NOT their jurisdiction and have nothing to do with immigration nor national security.
