The world's largest lakes, including Lake Tahoe, have been warming rapidly for 25 years as the global climate changes, NASA scientists report.
And throughout the Northern Hemisphere, surface water temperatures of many lakes have been rising even faster than the warming air above them, according to observations by ultra-sensitive satellites.
In a report just published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, Philipp Schneider and Simon Hook of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena say the warming rate of all the major lakes observed by the satellites has averaged nearly a full degree Fahrenheit per decade. For some lakes in the Northern Hemisphere, the average increases reached nearly two degrees Fahrenheit per decade, they said.
"This is just one of several lines of evidence that global warming is really taking place," Hook said. "The evidence is striking and worldwide."
A geologist who designs high-resolution, Earth-observing instruments for satellites, Hook frequently measures surface temperatures at Lake Tahoe directly in order to validate the accuracy of the satellite observations.
The warming trend there has been particularly striking, indicating that the lake's surface temperature has often risen twice as fast as the air temperatures above it, he said.
Geoffrey Schladow, director of the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at UC Davis, is familiar with the report on global temperatures. Tahoe has long been a bellwether for understanding the effects of warming lakes generally, he said.

Can’t believe anything out of NASA any more since it is headed by an Obama henchman, a Muslim loving one at that.
I am a dork. I should have given the obligatory “/s”.
Thought it was implied. LOL

Experts study effects of Sacramento pollution on Lake Tahoe
Using data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the study ranked metropolitan areas by how many days their air pollution levels exceeded national health standards during a three-year period. All of the top five cities in the nationwide survey were in California, three in the Central Valley.
“Tahoe is definitely being impacted by pollution from Sacramento and the Bay area,’’ Jennifer Quashnick, an Air Quality Program Manager with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, told the Tahoe Daily Tribune.
“We’ve known for years that we can have transport of pollutants in the wind.’’
The TRPA has also observed an increase in the ozone around Tahoe at night, an indication that pollution is coming from outside the basin since local ozone normally rises with the heat of the day.
Not all pollution found in Tahoe comes from outside the basin. Quashnick said that while southwest summer winds blow in contaminants, in the winter all pollution is generated locally.
The Placer County Air Pollution Control District reported that the majority of pollution in Tahoe comes from wood-burning stoves and diesel engines.
The California Air Resources Board, along with the TRPA, EPA, and the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board, is conducting a $2 million study to track how much pollution is entering the basin from the valley.
No your not...lol I know what you mean though. Because there is no voice tone to hear and facial expressions it’s hard to tell sometimes what exactly people mean.
I was the chief engineer or just plain old mechanic on the sternwheeler Tahoe Queen for almost two years at Lake Tahoe back around 1990.
Its an alpine lake totally fed by alpine snow runoff, the average depth is 850’ the deepest if I remember right is over 1300’ and its 23 miles long and 11 miles wide. There is enough pure fresh drinking water to supply the US for 50 years, it could cover the surface area of Texas with 6” or California with 11” of water.
And yes its very cold, I fell off the snow covered deck on the shuttle boat in the winter in shallow water at the shore once, luckily I was wearing high quality thermal insulation but it still put me into hypothermia, the crew practically undressed me to warm me back up, they said I was out of it like I was drunk.
I have seen some pretty intense storms on that lake, large rollers, high winds and even a waterspout.
As far as the lake warming unless some new fault appeared nearby if anything it would be near the south shore where there has been silt runoff problems for years. And as far as I remember there isn’t any volcanic source nearby, closest would be Mammoth Lakes a couple hundred miles south, of which HAS been getting some intense observations for its unusual spike in activity.
If anyone was thinking that California was going to have its “big one” or a 2012 event it would probably start at Mammoth.
See now, if you saw me deliver line sarcastically and dead pan you stop for second before laughing.
Hope you are having a wonderful Thanksgiving.
You are correct.
The term “global” warming or cooling is meaningless. There are always cooling and warming places on the Earth, since climate is never static, although determining if the overall average is on an uptrend or a downtrend is harder to determine, and can only be determined qualitatively and not quantitatively.
We can’t compare temperatures estimated by the width of fossil tree rings with temperatures measured by thermometers. We can’t compare temperatures measured with standardized modern thermometers to those measured with thermometers made by artisans hundreds of years ago. Satellite and surface temperatures cannot be compared. And satellites, which arguably are the most accurate method, have only been around for about 40 years, meaning that we have no accurate long-term temperature record.
Yet, according to the proponents of the anthropogenic global warming hypothesis, we are able to calculate the Earth’s temperature so accurately throughout geological history that we can determine that the temperature has gone up by 0.25 degree (or whatever the claim is).
The infamous hockey stick graph should never have gotten past peer review. He incorporated at least three different methods of determining temperature, and applied some highly questionable adjustments to the data to come up with it. If I were a peer reviewer for that paper, I would have remarked that the graph was unacceptable as presented, and that either a) all the data would have to be determined using the same method, or b) he would have to validate each method used and show that they all give identical results before combining them into the same graph, and discuss the validation methods in the paper.
But water temperatures in the Great Lakes ARE several hundred degrees...above absolute zero.
My hubby is like that, very dry sense of humor. Hope your having a wonderful Thanksgiving too :) I’m stuffed like a turkey....lol
That was before the hippies came up from Berkeley and put yellow rocks all over Desolation to tell us where to camp.
If Tahoe is warming can't the folks there just go to Al Gore and buy some credits from a cooler place?
Isn't that why THIS happens" (such as many mornings in the winter?)
Is Lake Tahoe Really Getting Bluer, Or Is The Sky Simply Falling?

Dr. Geoffrey Schladow is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Davis, and Director of the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center. He is an expert in the areas of environmental fluid mechanics, water quality modeling, and the dynamics of lakes, reservoirs, rivers and estuaries. Dr Schladow has worked on lakes in every continent, including the three largest lakes in California - Lake Tahoe, Clear Lake and the Salton Sea. When he is not wondering about the connections between climate change and water quality at Lake Tahoe, he is wandering about his office.

Global Warming Could Radically Change Lake Tahoe In Ten Years ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2008)
A new UC Davis study predicts that climate change will irreversibly alter water circulation in Lake Tahoe, radically changing the conditions for plants and fish in the lake — and it could happen in 10 years...
...Schladow said research is ongoing to determine if lowered global greenhouse-gas emissions would significantly slow the lake’s decline, or even prevent it...
...The new study showed that, if global greenhouse-gas emissions continue at current levels, mixing could become less frequent and less deep — even stop altogether as soon as 2019...
