(Mayor) Parker says city's ranking a real crime - Study puts Houston among most dangerous in country
Houston Chronicle ^ | Nov. 22, 2010, 10:10PM | BRADLEY OLSON

Mayor Annise Parker lashed out at an controversial annual study released Monday that placed Houston among the most dangerous cities in the United States with a population of 500,000 or higher.

"Crime Rankings 2010-2011," published by CQ Press, ranks Houston's crime as ninth-highest for big cities nationwide, placing it on a list with the likes of Detroit and Columbus, Ohio., although the city has less than half the crimes per capita of those atop the rankings. Violent crime in Houston fell 8 percent during the first half of this year and was on a pace to reach the lowest rate since 2000, records show.

Parker said the data released by CQ Press are flawed because the publisher allows different cities to avoid counting certain crimes....

Parker... decided to speak out on the issue because of her role as chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Criminal and Social Justice Committee, said the statistics also can be misleading because they use some arbitrary boundaries to define cities and metropolitan areas...

Not everyone... seems to mind the rankings. Sugar Land, for example, now can claim the mantle of "Safest City in Texas" because of them. The Houston suburb, with its estimated 81,000 residents, was 389th out of 400 cities that made the list, putting it in company with Orem, Utah, and Troy, Mich.

...Ben Krasney, a spokesman for CQ Press, defended the use of rankings, saying it provides context that can help people evaluate what the crime rate in their city means.

...CQ Press calculates crime rate rankings by comparing the rate of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft with national averages.

...This year, Houston registers only slightly higher than Dallas, and the reverse was true last year. San Antonio and Austin appear far lower on the list.

It takes time to cull the Katrina “victims” from the herd. Things are starting to settle down, but we still have a ways to go.

The former mayor, the idiot Bill White and the current mayor, Mayor Licket-D-Split both believe in shielding the illegals. Houston has too much of Mexico in it.

Hopefully the Texas legislature will pass a law like Arizona did and we can get some of the gangsters from south of the border out of town.

Mayor Annise Parker should lash out against Houston's sanctuary city policy rather than the people who compiled the ratings.

Harboring illegal aliens, well, brings people who break laws to you city. Funny that.

Nope-

We won't look at what is causing the crime. We won't look at what can fix the crime. We will of course fault the findings and rationalize why it's OK to maintain the status qua. In 2010 that's called “leadership” in America.

When HPD are sent out to write revenue tickets instead of addressing violent crime and property theft, the rates will rise. I was robbed at gunpoint this year, just up the road from where they were running a DWI/inspection stickers crackdown (multiple police cars and crew).

First officer I told listened to my tale and got the hell out of there. Second officer I told took down my report. Never did appear in the list of crime incidents (there is an online map).

While they’d been running a checkpoint operation there for weeks, after the report of armed criminals in the area, they pulled up shop and haven’t returned.

I see Jackson Miss. came in 14th.

A news radio there used to say come night, it was the gun and knife show.

That was a scary place.

It takes time to cull the Katrina “victims” from the herd. Things are starting to settle down, but we still have a ways to go.

Illegals and their American enablers are the main cause of crime in Houston.

A patrolman was gunned down by an illegal during a traffic stop recently. Normally, this is a capital offense in Texas, but the Hispanic jury decided to spare him the needle, which means he'll be out on parole in 20 years. It not the first time a HPD officer has killed shot by an illegal, but the first time in Houston a cop-killing illegal has been given a pass.

Also recently, a man was out dining with his family and noticed by a group of illegals who thought they recognised him. They followed him (and his family) out to the parking lot and gunned him down. He had no connection to the Gulf cartel - just an ordinary Joe, could have been anybody.

I don't have time to read the whole article but I'm wondering if the author mentions which political party has run these cities for decades on end.

Ha! Sometimes I say the craziest things.

There is a substation on Montgomery in the Acres area that is behind my neighborhood. So cops frequently come and go.

At the intersection of TC Jester and Victory, there was a car accident, a very obvious car accident. The cop car coming north on TC Jester turned right on Victory and completely ignored the accident in the intersection.

(shakes head)

Oy

Its a little misleading. Houston is high (the list I saw had Houston at 45th) — but Houston suburbs are very low (Sugarland is 389th, Missouri City 365th, Pearland 359th).

In my opinion, NO honorable mayor would serve on, much less chair, a committee with that name.
