Feds deem Four Loko unsafe drink
Richard Craver
Issue date: 11/19/10
The makers of seven alcoholic energy drinks have been given 15 days to show that their beverages are safe for consumers or remove them from the marketplace.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued warning letters yesterday to four beverage manufacturers including the maker of Four Loko saying that the drinks are being marketed in violation of federal law.
It determined that caffeine is an "unsafe food additive" when mixed with alcoholic beverages. If a beverage-maker cannot prove that its drink is safe, the FDA can seize the products.
The FDA issued a "prove it" notice to nearly 30 manufacturers in November 2009. "We expect these warning letters to be read across the industry," said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, a deputy FDA commissioner.

Banned - rum and coke? The Captain will not be pleased.
And when I’m drunker than a skunk, they give me......BLACK COFFEE!!!
Does this mean I can’t have a Bailey’s and coffee at a restaurant anymore? How about at home? My wife’s actually had a Red Bull and vodka, although I wouldn’t recommend it; it’s pretty nasty.
There are something like 25 brands of alcoholic “energy” drinks....
As long as they are sold to customers over 21, what is the problem?
Say what you will. I am happy The One is watching our for me. Excuse me while I head to the head to puke.......
There was something about the drink and the Market...Wonder if anyone has been buying short.
“As long as they are sold to customers over 21, what is the problem?”
Too much freedom obviously.
Sorry, but ‘our’ should be “out” Even with the Preview I mess up.
My “irish espresso” is now contraband? Say it ain’t so!
How does the government manage to come up with these decisions almost overnight? Isn’t there due process, regulatory hearings, public comments, etc? It’s this same overreaching government that quickly banned all drilling in the Gulf and then extended it with bogus scientific information. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, the process sucks.
Five apple martinis and she wants to dance with the stars.
If that’s the standard then how can anyone be allowed to sell any alcoholic beverage? It’s one of the most unsafe substances ingested by man.
You should upgrade to Free Republic gold then
Mine didn’t like hers, though she didn’t find it as distasteful as I did. No weird reaction in her case though.
People descended from beer and wine drinkers are common today.
There are not so many around descended from those who drank the water.
I do the same thing. When I get to work in the morning I pour a steaming cup of coffee, go back to my desk, and dump a couple of fingers of Glenlivet in. It smooths out the day. What do I do you may ask: I’m a brain surgeon.
I found them distasteful too. Those little suckers cost about $3 per can, and everyone loves them as long as someone else is doing the buying thing.
You must be the neurologist who “fixed” me.
Thank you.
